The Guardian printed a lazy swipe at a possible England XI for the next world cup in Australia/New Zealand.

Cook
Roy
Pietersen
Morgan
Buttler
Stokes
Patel
Bresnan
Broad
Kerrigan
Finn.

A bored journalist in a hotel room before the bar opens? Or a realistic vision of the not so far off future?

Definitely the former, I can see at least two emerging players knocking on the door to Oceania.

Yes. We're missing Trott, Bopara, Swann from that team who might well be around. Hales and Briggs who are ahead of options in this team. Six months ago Bairstow would have been in a speculative team. Now it seems like the first act of his career is over, in the eyes of the press. His lustre in the writing of teams on the back of envelopes, has faded.

Most instructive thing about this team is a sudden doubt over Swann and Trott. And a lack of belief in Ravi.

My team for the 2015 WC, would actually be the team I would pick for the next game England have. Otherwise they wouldn't be playing.

Like Borthwick and Rashid, Bairstow has been hyped up to the extreme for the one day format where he actually made his impact playing County Cricket. It just doesn't make sense to select a player who averages 28 in List A cricket to get into the ODI team.

THE FIRST SIDE IS THE SIDE I THINK WILL PLAY, THE 2ND SIDE I PUT WILL BE THE SIDE I WANT TO PLAY.

i think the side for the 2015 world cup will be:

1.KP
2.Cook (c)
3.Hales
4.Taylor
5.Morgan
6.Bopara
7.Bairstow (wk)
8.Swann
9.Bresnan
10.Dernbach
11.Finn

would love to see trott in there, but i think at some stage he might UNFORTUNATELY be left out due to strike rates, and having both cook and trott in top 3 they think wouldnt work

THE SIDE I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE

1.Cook
2.KP
3.Trott
4.Bopara
5.Morgan
6.Buttler (wk)
7.Bresnan
8.Swann
9.Broad
10.Dernbach
11.Finn

I remember Ron Atkinson picking his 2002 world cup side straight after the 98 world cup.

This is similar. Who know's what will happen or who will be in form or come through.

how can people keep saying that cook and trott in the top three doesn't work because they both score too slowly when since he took over as captain last year cook is averaging 54 in ODIs with a strikerate of 91

thats too slow ? :hmmm

bear in mind the next world cup is in aus/NZ where we are likely to have seaming pitches and with a new ball at each end its going to be tricky at the beginning of the innings which means having cook and trott in the top 3 makes even more sense

having said all that so much can happen over the next three years anyway

the important thing for me is that we look to build a squad and not be afraid to tweak things in order to find the best XI and the best balance

Your prediction for the actual side has four bowlers, cf90.

Woakes 'n Stokes might have a chance.

My choice, the team that played in 1-3 of the recent series, give or take Bresnan.

Prediction for actual side-

Cook
Pietersen
Trott
Bell
Morgan
Prior
Stokes
Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Finn.

I think we'll see a core squad of the following players

Cook
KP
Trott
Bresnan
Finn
Morgan
Broad

With Bopara and Samit if they remain consistent being added to that.

The remaining places will be open to much flux over the next 12 months, I would say the remaining places in the squad could be taken up by Davies, CK, Buttler, Bairstow, Taylor, Hales, Briggs, Borthwick, Kerrigan, and any others that make a case over the next 18 months either through T2O or FP at county level.

So a Possible Squad would be

Batting : Cook, KP, Trott,Morgan, Samit, Two of Hales/Bopara/Taylor
Keeping : Two of CK/Buttler/Bairstow/Davies
Bowling : Bresnan, Finn, Broad, Meaker/Dernbach, Two of Swann/Briggs/Borthwick/Kerrigan

If you take the view that The spare keeper can be used as a batsman then you would only take 1 of Hales,Bopara or Taylor and add in an extra Bowling resource.

i think bopara's spot is his to lose tbh, same could probably be said of patel

both are the type of players you really need in an ODI team for balance, in theory both are top order batsmen who can be relied on to bowl, especially in patel's case. i know others have outshone him but i think patel has probably done the most to establish himself not only in the squad but in the XI during this recent series.

said a few times that i think an "ideal" balance for an ODI side is 4 specialist batsmen, 4 specialist bowlers, a keeper and 2 all-rounders. now we aren't exactly blessed atm with people for those two all-rounder spots and thats why i think bopara and patel will be given every chance to cement a spot. stokes may come into the running if he comes back successfully from his injury, i think i saw a comment that his operation had been a success and he was expected to be back bowling again.

My ideal team for the 2015 world cup would quite simple be a team that has a lot of experiance playing together with a squad where we have experianced back up in all positions.

England often come up short in terms of pure experiance on the field because we have never really had a long term plan for the ODI side and all too often resort to blindly swapping in and out players.

A team will always be better than a collection of individuals.

Not sure Swann will still be playing ODIs then for obvious reasons but you never know.

Trott will be there. One bad series doesnt a bad player make.He will be back in form soon.

I have no idea why people are writing Anderson off ODIs.
