his record for the last 2 years is pretty stunning

there was some doubt over his place before the last ashes tour and alot of debate whether he would even be in the squad but wow has he repaid the faith they showed in him at that point

hes averaging over 70 since the start of that tour and has 10 centuries in just 43 innings over that period

He does have room for improvement at home. His record at home since 2010. I could make that look a bit worse if I went back a year further to the Pakistan series.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting

Which leans a hell of a lot on his 294 against (a demoralised) India but that is really searching for weaknesses.

His impressiveness was emphasised last winter, when he lead the way (with Trott, which is why I feel sanguine about his slump) in countering the Pakistani spinners, when the team went into a collective shock, just at the utterly alien nature of the challenge. He didn't freeze, or panic, or give up. And he lead them away from understandable doubt in Ahmedabad as well.

I'm not quite feeling anymore that his ultimate trump card is his concentration which allows him to make the absolute maximum of propitious opportunity. So not just mental characteristics. He has an all round game now, to all kinds of bowling and plays not only all the shots, but plays them at the right time. His improvement against spin is remarkable.
I always say that everybody's right.

I think it unfair to compare with previous eras. If he was still alive, Colin Cowdrey would have been first to send one of his beautifully crafted hand - written notes of congratulations - and totally unconditional.

An amazing achievement by any standards.

A stand-out achievement amongst his generation.
