Allan Border Medal

Postby from_the_stands » Mon Feb 04, 2013 6:22 am

Cricket's version of the Brownlow medal takes place tonight, with skipper Michael Clarke favourite to take out the top prize. Should he do so, it will be his fourth. Clarke should win Test player of the year, with the ODI award very much an open field this year. The Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year will almost certainly go to Mitchell Starc. The WAGs will be out in force, as they usually are for this sort of thing. Should be a good night.

Warne never won the ABM. Colin Miller won the Test award, but not Shane.

Any pictures of the WAGS would be appreciated. Cricinfo usually carries those!

Michael Clarke predictably won the AB medal, and also picked up Test player of the year. Clint McKay won ODI player of the year, with Twatto picking up the gong for T20I's. Phil Hughes was domestic cricketer of the year, with Joe Burns from Queensland winning the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award. Pics of the WAG's haven't been downloaded as yet, but here's one of Haley Bracken from a few years ago.

The top 10 from the ABM;

198 - Michael Clarke
165 - Mike Hussey, Shane Watson
148 - Dave Warner
122 - Mitchell Starc
116 - George Bailey
105 - Matthew Wade
98 - Clint McKay
81 - David Hussey
78 - Mitchell Johnson

These standings show a few thngs; firstly just hopw far ahead of the pack Micheal Clarke really is, how important Mike Hussey was to the team, and how promonant Mitchell Starc has become across all three formats in the past twelve months. Looking ahead to next year's ABM, Mussey obviously won't be there, and Twatto is unlikely to be as high. Should Mitchell Starc continue improving the way he has been, and destroys England, I reckon we'll see him closer to the top. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jackson Bird up there, and possibly even James Pattinson (if he stays healthy).

Looking at the comments I made about this last year, I obviously predicted the wrong Mitchell destroying England. The other one has been injured, along with James Pattinson. I'm a bit surprised that Ryan Harris and Brad Haddin didn't finish higher. Twatto would seem to still be a key player. Chris Rogers has also had a good year. Playing across multiple formats certainly helps in this, along with staying healthy. Next year, I would expect the top 5 to be; Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson, Dave Warner, maybe Chris Rogers and possibly Steve Smith or George Bailey. Aaron Finch might feature somewhere too, especially with the World T20 taking place this year.

Quite delayed here then. now I know, I might go to bed.

Shouldn't that make Ryan Harris a close 2nd, just 3 points behind Johnson?
Maybe

congratulations to Johno on this award. His meteoric rise from some of the lowest cricketing depths ever plumbed by a player, ought to inspire every cricketer going through tough times. (there is hope for Phil Hughes, after all)
