Indeed.

The report that I read said that witness/es stated "he was punched and kicked by at least four men". Scary stuff.

Some people seem to have an innate ability to get themselves into trouble though.

It's irresponsible drinking (not necessarily by Ryder)... but is there such a thing as 'responsible' drinking?

Anyhow, best wishes to him.

Reminds me of the David Hooks incident although different circumstances.

Ryder and controversy tended to go hand-in-hand but this is a big tragedy.

Hopefully he can make a full recovery.

Yes, for example, being able to get off a bar stool unaided falls into that category.

Was really hoping we would hear of him in the international series this year because NZ simply cant do without his batting, especially in the limited overs.... Sad that the only mention has been this.

Good luck to his speedy recovery

Seems the police have annouced that there was no drink in Ryder's system, so the idea this was an alcohol fuelled argument from his side is negated.

There are some tough neighbourhoods in New Zealand. It looks like Ryder found himself in one of them. Shocking news, this.

Way too early to be speculating of anything, a case of taking it a day at a time.

I was under the impression that the coma was medically induced and that Ryder wasnt actually in a coma? I might be wrong, but thats the impression I got from the news stories.

Also lots of eye witness accounts also seem to be saying that Ryder was beaten up with no argument or disordering leading to it
