TMS, Sky, etc.

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

What I miss most on TMS and SKY is the fact that they rarely give the field placings and who's fielding where, if one is only listening its particularly sad. On radio I used to like it when the commentator would add whether the bowler was running away or toward him, which allowed one to have a mental picture of the game.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

36000 is the distance in kilometres. D/L - about 22250 in miles.

I'm not sure what causes a delay of 15 secs, but it's certainly not transmission or processing time. I'd guess it might be to allow Sky to cut the pictures if something untoward happens, and they don't want to show it.

Matty Hayden commentated for TMS last time out. I thought I'd dislike him, as I did when he played, but he was actually quite enjoyable to listen to. Very different from his playing persona. Glenda might turn out to be the same.

The delay has got longer over the years. I also noticed a couple of times at the start of sessions that there wasn't one at all, and then it reappeared. So I think it's artificial. I always presumed it was to allow Sky to mute any swearing on the stump mic. I can't imagine that Sky would bother using it as a spoiler to people wanting to listen to the radio while watching.

Of course, you can buy radios that you can pause, and then run at the same time as the pictures. It would feel like an extravagance though, just for tms. Shame you can't do the same on your computer..

I wasn't that keen on Hayden, though I mainly heard him on the C5 commentary. It felt like listening to to a management training day.

Apparently Haydos gave Boycott some backchat, which is fine. But I imagine that the bluster he would have got back wouldn't have been any fun. Better not to provoke Boycott and hope for the best.

I agree. Half the time I don't know where anyone is fielding if they aren't in the slips.

Thanks, DA. The last time I checked, quite recently, the delay was about 3 seconds.

I suppose you could start TMS online and then pause it for the required amount of time.

TMS in the car or abroad - Sky at home if I'm allowed - never mind who pays for it!!

Gower, Atherton and Bumble for me on Sky. Hilarious the other day when Williamson got one in a painful spot. Bumble berated by Atherton for his histrionics when hit by a ball from Thommo in the 70's. Bumble's indignant response about modern players dressed like Michelin men whilst he was armed with a cap and the Readers Digest down his pants instead of a thigh pad - then comparing Thommo to Broad or whoever it was. My wife and I were in hysterics.

I don't think you can do that? It's a live transmission. With some radios you can simultaneously record and play, so you can pause it, like the tv. But I don't think you can do that online?

Oh for some reason I thought you could... But maybe not.

Bumble is my favourite sky commentator. That will go down like a lead balloon I am sure!

There's only Atherton that I positively like listening to on Sky. I don't mind Nas. Actually, i think Allott is a decent commentator, though doesn't do Tests.

Lloyd, Holding and Gower I can listen to without too much friction.

I don't like Athers. Holding I don't mind. As you have alluded to with the players/non-players. It seems like sky have tried to assemble a who's who of English cricket. They would be better served to have a broadcaster or two on there in my opinion. Alan Carr and Keith Lemon would really brighten it up.
