Rumours over Broad's place, so he might not start. Woakes hasn't got an overseas record to back him up. Curran looks a bit medium pace. Maybe Stone will make his debut.

My team:
Burns/Denly/Root/Pope/Stokes/Bairstow/Buttler/Moeen/Leach/Broad/Anderson

Jennings/Rashid/Curran/Woakes/Stone.

Too many pace bowlers, not enough batters. Still don't like Buttler at seven unless he keeps.
I always say that everybody's right.

Denly is an interesting choice. As a younger guy he was always a brilliant stroke maker, lovely crisp striker of the ball. But he froze in one day internationals, became way too conservative. Also that outside of stump game has weakness. I don't believe he's test player material, but the guy has always had talent that elevated him around others with similar records. Good luck to him

perhaps the reason the CC is going on long into the winter months, is so that there is less time for debutants to lose the form that got them their call up in the first place

The squad for me was an intresting one..

Burns, always had to get the call up, scored runs for fun, for past 4 years, and i hope he plays well....Jennings, After Cook retired, Jennings was always going to get another go, they don't want two new openers, which based on that means for me Denly will bat 3. Good player, has got better with age, and his leggies are useful, especially in Sri Lanka....Middle order picks itself....bowling wise i would think, Mo and Rash will play, meaning probably Jimmy and Broad....Woakes and Curran too medium pace really for sub continenet....I can see why they have picked Stone based on the fact he is genuinely rapid...however only played 6 CC games all year, and his injury record is almost as bad as Wood's, so i can't see him being around for long.... people mock sri lanka, but they always find ways to win at home, won't be an easy tour at all....in tests anyway..

not good enough at T20, probably

saving the big score until after the squad was selected was probably poor timing on his part

Still had a decent season though. Only Burns has more hundreds. A thousand runs for the season.

feels as though Hildreth has done that a few times, with little recognition. Sometimes it's the timing that's important.... and who you have in your corner, shouting your name

Hildreth looks set to take the rather unwanted award of best batsman of his generation never to get an England cap.

Feel that the Test team is looking to be more like the ODI team. The first thing is the 6 bowlers policy, as we have in ODIs. Rashid getting a central contract means England expect him to play in Tests. What team in Test cricket have 6 bowlers?

"Alastair Cook’s international retirement has given England the chance to switch to a more aggressive approach to opening Test match batting, says captain Joe Root'.
“If it means opening batters bat in a more one-day fashion long term I don’t think that is a bad thing for the game,” he said. “It makes for exciting viewing.

Well I hope Burns is not told to be more aggressive in opening the batting. :no He is not going to have a long Test career.
Meanwhile Roy is expected to bat at the top of the order. England asked Surrey to bat him at 3. He is on the Lions 4 day game.

Bayliss seems to have convinced Root that a more aggressive approach is the right way to go. Yes I can see Starc, Hazelwood and Cummins letting that happen. The quicker Bayliss goes and we get a proper Test coach the better.

“It makes for exciting viewing". :scared

Team for the summer - Roy Hales Bairstow Root Stokes Ali Buttler Curran Rashid Broad Anderson :hide

Andrew Strauss has had enough - he has resigned.

Glad that he's gone... though extremely sorry that it's because his wife is seriously ill. An opportunity for Andy Flower?

When Graves, Harrison and Strauss came together in 2015 ECB reserves were £70m. In the 3 years that came down to £8m. The big spenders?
