If we're going with a prediction (i.e. not my actual choices)...

England (17): Cook, Stoneman, Ballance, Root (c), Malan, Stokes, Bairstow (wk), Ali, Woakes, Broad, Anderson, Jennings, Westley, Foakes (wk), Crane, Ball, Wood

Lions (16): Robson, Duckett, Livingstone (c), Clarke, Lawrence, Dawson, Billings (wk), S.Curran, T. Curran, Porter, Leach, Bell-Drummond, A. Davies (wk), Helm, C. Overton, Bess

This is working off the presumption that TRJ, Hameed and J. Overton are all injured, though Hameed could get added to the squad depending on fitness. Also not sure if Billings will be picked or left to play the BBL (if so then Davies, Duckett and Clarke all over wicket-keeping duties).

Thought I posted earlier. maybe put it on the wrong thread. Ballance, Jennings and Westley don't feel more than 50-50. Reckon Wood will be in the Lions.

Maybe the warm ups were an extended bowl off for the last bowling spot.

Well I hope our main bowlers get the most overs this time. I'd say 50-60 overs would be ideal.
They would need to play in at least 2 warm up games especially as Broad and Anderson are rested from these last cc games.
Reserves should only get one game.

Report that Vince and Ballance are back. Which feels optimistic.

Telegraph also says the same. Got to say I am surprised by the recall of Vince.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2017 ... es-series/

Foakes is reseve WK, no surprises there. Overton's a bit of a surprise, but maybe they feel the need for a backup allrounder given the Stokes situation.

I'm also surprised by the lack of a third opener. I guess they're trying to make a statement of confidence in Stoneman. I wish him well, but I can't help but feel England will wish that they had the flexibility to pick Jennings or Robson (although hopefully both will tour with the Lions so will be in Australia if needed).

Ridiculous to have Crane in there. Let him tour with the Lions by all means, but I agree with MPV on this one - he'll be carrying the drinks for three months, with maybe a game in Sydney if England are 4-0 down and desperate, which will do his fledgling career no good at all. Why not let him play cricket for the winter?

XI for the first game will no doubt be Cook, Stoneman, X, Root, X, Stokes (if current circumstances don't rule him out), Bairstow, Moeen, Woakes, Broad, Anderson, where X will be 2 from Ballance, Vince and Malan depending on who performs in the warm-ups.

Cook
Stoneman
Vince
Root
Malan or Ballance
Stokes
Bairstow
Moeen
Woakes
Broad
Anderson

Foakes/Crane/Overton/Ball

Looks light on batters, particularly top three batters (as you say bfl).

I thought I was going to see Dawson and Plunkett in there.

Mainly stunned with Vince's recall; I'd be hardly more surprised to see Boyd Rankin in the 16.

Ballance's selection is more dispiriting than surprising.

Assuming the predicted squad is correct : I agree with Arthur that top order batting looks unnecessarily thin. Sure the options weren't great anyway ; but wouldn't it have made more sense to select a reserve opener who might also bat three rather than three natural number fives - none of which inspire huge confidence in any case ? Can see this going like the Indian tour with the reserve keeper ending up as the best batting alternative...

Bowling looks reasonable though I would prefer to have left Crane with the Lions. Would have also liked Plunkett on board but I guess he will be with the Lions. Truth is , the presence of the Lions gives a measure of security in any case as long as management is prepared to be a bit flexible.

Cook Stoneman xxxxxxxx. Root Malan Stokes Bairstow Moeen Woakes Broad Anderson.

Not a bad Ten out of Eleven. Shame about the limited choices for number three...

The article I linked says Vince is expected to bat at three. These pre-announcement scoops are often/usually wrong, but this article is confident and is backed by another paper. Maybe it will be wrong, because picking Stoneman without an alternative seems unlikely.

Im getting a bet on 5-0. In the simplest terms, this squad looks pretty appalling.

The bowling is potentially ok, but im not sure the batters will do to well against a fully fit Australian bowling line up.

Cook will need another one of those summers in Australia that he had a few tours ago for England to be competative.

It does seem to be a muddle.

Not going to be 5-0 though.
