Think if David Willey has a poor summer, could be the last we see of him for a while? Only effectibr with the new ball, cannon fodder rest of the time, and hasn't delivered with the bat at international level either...?

Pace bowlers are inconsistent in white ball games these days. Some days, anyone at all could go the distance. I don't think they need to definitively cast him out, but I suspect he wouldn't get in the best first XI now. Not sure he's exactly cannon fodder after the tenth over; though he rarely gets a chance later on now, which says the captain doesn't trust him.

On most pitches around the world, he pretty much is cannon fodder...military medium pace, and unless the ball moves around you can just hit through the line against him...i wonder if he bowled in middle overs etc at some point, to get through more overs, the keeper could stand up to the stumps?

Willey doesnt have a role in this team anymore. When he first got capped, England probably had a batting line up that could have routinely used him coming in near the end and plundering 15-20 runs in quick time. Nowadays, they rarely need it, so whatever batting capacity he his is underused and puts far more pressure on his bowling. And is he, or has he ever, been a standout full time bowling option? Not for me.

When I watch him I cant help but think he was born 20 years too late. Back then, you could hide people like Robin Singh in the middle overs to get those out the way as batsman consolidated, and then their fielding and occasional bat thrusting at the death could win you matches. Those roles dont exist anymore.

Four English CC1 batters averaging over fifty in a summer where the ball dominated early on: Foakes, Hildreth, Burns, Pope.

Pope looks set to be the next Bairstow. He's even ginger.

Seriously, early days, but the lad looks set for an England future. Unless the wheels fall off when he gets picked up for development by the Lions. How often does that happen? :facepalm

I don't know why they are so hesitant to try Foakes?

What I find strange is Tom Curran and Ball were selected and had not bowled a ball are injured. Side and back injuries. Overton and Sam Curran called up. Plunkett wouldn't be dropped so must have an injury as well.

The pecking order must be

Woakes 30.77
Plunkett 29.75
Stokes 38.01
Wood 46.18

Willey 36.09
T Curran 31.41
Ball 45.28
S Curran -
Roland-Jones 34.00
Overton econ 7.85
Finn 29.37
Topley 25.62

Don't see any other call ups before the World Cup.
Jordan not selected for ODIs and Woakes not selected for T20s. IPL prices Woakes £810,000 & Jordan £110,000

Would like to see Woakes, Curran, Plunkett and Stokes.

Ball played for Notts during the timeframe of this ODI series I think. Didn't realise he and TC were injured.

Do you think they kept their injuries/niggles to themselves? Both Ball and T Curran are also selected for the T20s.

Ball injured from the Notts game maybe and Woakes, Stokes, Curran from the IPL.

They were talking about Stokes hamstring during the IPL
Woakes was RCB's leading wicket taker and then dropped (injured). Bowled about 15 overs in the Test against Pakistan.
Curran (6 wickets at 19.66 was replaced by Scantlebury-Searles 2 wickets at 44.50)

Woakes talking about missing the IPL next year to be fit for the World Cup.

A 5-0 beating over the old enemy not-withstanding, have we learned any more about our World Cup chances? I would suggest that ten names (fitness permitting) are pretty much still inked in for the - hopefully two, but maybe more - key matches next summer:

Roy
Bairstow
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Woakes
Rashid
Plunkett

That leaves one spot up for grabs, plus 4/5 more in the squad.
To my mind, the missing eleventh cog is a fast bowler to open and close the innings. An English Starc/Boult etc. is not going to unearthed, so who is the best option from those available? Of the pace bowling options trying to nail down a place - Wood, Willey, Ball and both Currans all have good & bad points - but, as yet, none have done well enough to warrant to continuous selection.
5 ODIs in both Sri Lanka and West Indies are unlikely to provide many clues, due to the nature of pitches and conditions, so that leaves 3 matches in July at home to India and 6 next May versus Ireland & Pakistan, to find the solution.

For the back-up positions:
Hales looks a certainty to be the top order batsman.
Billings is the go-to middle order reserve, but is another player has done little lately to demand a place in the team.
Is a spare spinner necessary (yes, in my opinion) and who would it be? Possibly Liam Dawson, but will he get another call-up?

Who'd be a selector?
Sports broadcasting media nut miscast as a hard-working family man. Or should that be the other way around?

Finn might make a return. He was a very good ODI bowler once.

Maybe Topley can make a comeback.

They might be yesterdays men but if they did get their mojos working again they would be key players.

James Anderson?!

England could do with looking at a mystery spinner for if Rashid gets injured.
