In the pre-Pakistan interviews, Smith talked about how they wanted to move away from Moeen the spinner in Tests. So that would indicate that if he comes back, it's in the middle order rather than competing with Bess and Leach.

Neither is in brilliant form - Bess doesn't have many Championship wickets and Leach has been injured (broken thumb followed by a concussion).

Bess being "in possession" I'd imagine he will get the first match against India. Unfortunate for Leach that he got injured but it is not as if he bowled England to victory in NZ so I think he might have to wait and see how his county teammate fares.

Moeen did well against India last time but faces a bit of a task to get back in Tests at the moment : his batting has been such a dramatic letdown over the winter tours that I'm not sure he has much chance of a return before they head back to the subcontinent . Doing well in the white ball stuff and for the moment I think he'll have to be content with that.

Bess has played 3 county games since that Pakistan game, and hes conceded a lot of runs for not a lot of wickets. Average in the 60s zone since that Pakistan game. Like Crane, throwing a young spinner like this at an Indian team that eat up crap spinners is, for me, a big mistake. England need to go with Leach for me, bit more experience, and if they are to rate Bess as a serious future prospect, I think keeping him away from a series like this is a good option.

Lions team to play India A:
Cook Burns Gubbins Malan Pope Woakes Sam Curran Bess Fisher Leach Porter

Well this could be a competition between Bess and Leach, and maybe between Sam Curran and Woakes.
Cook will get to see his new opening partner in Burns or Gubbins as I don't think Jennings will last the summer.
Malan or Pope as well.

Woakes is injured at the moment and has been left out of the T20/ODI series. So good news if he will be fit for this if a bit surprising if he is back playing for the Lions. I remember him playing at that level for many years without getting a chance to step up.

Bit of a slip back for Malan.

Expect Woakes is getting a game here, as there is no other first class cricket.

Tomorrow Woakes is playing as a batman only for the Warks 2nd XI. After the Lions game I wonder if he will play for Warks on their cc game. Anderson and Broad will be playing for their counties. Think all the ODI players will be rested.

Coming back from injuries (all the bowling attack)

Anderson (shoulder)
Broad (ankle)
Woakes (knee)
Stokes (hamstring)
Leach ( broken thumb and then concussion)

Injured Overton, Roland-Jones, Finn, T Curran, Tongue, Garton, Mahmood, Topley.

Rashid has been recalled by England.

Moeen is back.

Jamie Porter is in the squad.

Sam Curran has retained his place.

Woakes is injured. Bess and Leach are out. Leach has been described as being 'short of bowling' even though he is currently playing in the CC and Rashid hasn't played a fc game all summer and I doubt he's bowled a spell of more than four overs this year. In fact Smith's logic would fit in well on the close your eyes and think of England thread.

Can't help but feel Leach and Bess should be in for Ali and Rashid. At what point is Smith just going to copy the ODI team in tests.

Sooner rather than later I hope.
