The cricketing public is not happy, discontent is simmering under the surface. A massive loss at home to India in the first test with a controversial pick leading the way with a splattergun show of bowling might just blow the doors off. Whether or not thats fair is up to debate, but as I said, his behaviour in calling out Vaughan makes me quite unsympathetic.

I cant see his career on all levels not being affected if he cant pull a performance out the bag. Assuming England dont blink first and not pick him.

Well it would be rather amusing if the recent bit of rain and cooler conditions caused England to concentrate on seamers and left Rashid carrying drinks...

Not sure Yorkshire would be so amused :)

Why didn't they just leave Rashid in the white ball side? He's becoming one of the most critical cogs in that machine, but if the fallout from this affects his standing in the England dressing room, I hope it doesn't flow through to the ODI side.

Wasnt he on tour with England when he announced he didnt want to play red ball cricket. Hes played white ball series multiple times since. So this isnt a reason that stands up to any scrutiny.

Last time an England player wanted to miss a few games, he was made an example. Perhaps Rashid wanted to avoid another saga akin to Kevin Pietersen.

Alviro Patterson wrote:Rashid taking a hiatus from red ball cricket was entirely justified.

I dont think anyone is suggesting Rashid should need to justify not playing for Yorkshire. He does what he wants. What is not justified is picking him in the national team when his most recent form is terrible, and when he has turned his back on the game. For whatever reason, it makes no sense whatsoever. Its a massively damaging precedent to set. The result of the individual decision matter little. If a player not being picked for two years and off the radar can waltz into a national team playing nothing recently, then are the ECB going to force people like Root and Cook to go get form in the county game? Not a chance.

Presuming Rashid will play on Wednesday, Moeen Ali is probably front runner for the spin berth.

What use would a finger spinner have been on green top, pudding wickets prepared in April and early May? The 1st two months of spring was absolutely wet, cold and miserable. Drying weather non-existent in the 1st four months of 2018 as the water tables were above ground lev

So all spinners should just bugger off on holiday when conditions get tough? On our next Asian tour, should the seamers just turn up the day before and not both with the warm ups or training, because after all the ball doesnt swing? He had an opportunity to play last week didnt he, and declined. And that was admist a record breaking heatwave where it hasntrained in weeks. Another reason that makes no sense.

Seamers can bowl cutters or use their pace in sub continent conditions.

Most county captains did not field frontline spinners in April, even if they did those spinners bowled sproadically.

Lancashire County Championship game came too soon for Rashid after playing successive white ball international series against Australia and India, along with a 36hr turnover between the Roses T20. Fellow internationals Willey and Plunkett were not selected in the same game and was ordered to build up their bowling stocks by the Yorkshire coaching staff before being considered for future red ball selection.

Maybe the journalists and pundits should consider the reasons why Rashid made a decision to take a break from red ball cricket, instead of taking the moral high ground.

Oh they are definitely going to do that after he came out and said to someone, who's opinion is pretty much a consensus across the press, that he was stupid. If Rashid dont win the series on his own, he can guarantee every single bad ball will be like a nail in his coffin. As I said previously, which was the main point, the firing back at Vaughan was a moment of absolutely stupidity on his own accord.

His reasons anyway dont matter. Its not about him quitting, its about him quitting and somehow rising in stock with the selectors. Hes dont nothing to justify being picked. Had he taken 3 years off and then came back and blitzed county line ups, then I am sure no one would be saying anything.

If its personal, if its money, if its tiredness...... irrelevant. Not played in ages, shouldnt be picked.

Indeed Rashid should not have been picked, but it might be a one off selection since Bess and Leach are training with the England team prior to the 1st test.

BBC site

Jonathn Agnew
Everything Ed Smith is touching is turning to gold at the moment and he has once again taken a punt on youth.

really?

gold?

heavy stuff gold and being made of it would explain why JB2 scored 0 and 1, seemingly unable to move his feet, and Dilly R only had enough energy to bowl 12 overs

Picking Pope is a bit of a punt and England have bypassed all the previous batters they identified as next in line. But he made the change, and that's good.

Agnew has been fawning all over Smith since he was announced as a selector, despite the lack of any credible evidence so far that he knows what he's doing.

Picking Pope is a pretty big gamble, but at least the lad's been performing in red ball cricket, unlike Buttler or Rashid. The issue is his age and lack of a decent sample size to know he's doing so well because he's the next Bradman, or because he's so fresh county bowlers haven't worked him out yet.

Very happy with the Pope selection, freshen up the batting and he's in good touch, so now's the time to get him in

With an eye on our top order issues, plus trying to shoehorn numerous 6/7s into the XI: Nick Gubbins seems to have done little wrong either for Middlesex or England Lions. Could we give him a go at 3? If he and Jennings both succeed, then you have a ready made replacement for Cook in a couple of years. Obviously not the right time to try it at Lords - with a confirmed debutante and already missing Stokes - or maybe even this summer, but possibly worth a try versus Sri Lanka in November?

Cook
2
3
Root
5
Stokes
Bairstow
8
9
Broad
Anderson

Seems a stronger backbone for next summers Ashes, than what we're currently looking at.

At the very least, there aren't square pegs in round holes...

Only played three games this season. Presumably injured.

I tend to look at the hundreds now that the season has been shredded by the ECB. Most tons in CC2 this season, Bell and Khawaja! Three apiece.

With so few games played, averages don't seem to mean as much.

Seems like Ollie Pope has been around longer than his 20 years of age, feels like that when seeing him make his Surrey debut in the 2016 One Day Cup Semi-Final.

Feel sorry for James Vince who has scored runs in the County Championship and One Day Cup, surely he is a logical selection for the test squad.

Vince had had plenty of chances. He could be picked for the 50 overs side, if there was a way into it. Can't play in the Test side unless he changes his method.
