Huge loss to test cricket.

He'll still play ODIs.

At least he's retiring on some sort of a high instead playing on to get milestones (like 300 Test wickets).

I guess he's the last of that legendary era that started in the 90s.

Greatest all-rounder ever in my eyes ( sorry Sobers )

Definitely seems the right time to go now though, enjoy your retirement Jacques.

Great cricketer and a huge loss to SA. Just look how many overs he bowled in the last test. Best all rounder i have seen play the game, a true great of the modern era

His batting of late has not been up to his previous standards but he was still a valuable player to SA, and he cant be replaced.

I wish everyone would stop retiring; seem to have lost a lot of greats/nearly greats over the last 2 years

Sad to see him go but it's strange not waiting until the end of the test series unless he's hoping for a Tendulkar type send off. Is this the modern way.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Clearly he is scared of facing the Aussies, and is calling it a day before we get there! In all seriousness, one of the greatest players of all time and easily the best all-rounder I've seen... and I've seen a few. He will be a massive loss for the Saffas. His contribution to South African cricket is second to none. Of all the players from around the world I wish were Australian, this guy is at the top of list.

The end of a truly great Test career....

IMHO, Kallis and sobers were the two greatest allrounders to play Test cricket.

Their averages....

Kallis, batting 55.12, bowling 32.53 = 22.59

Sobers, batting 57.78, bowling 34.03 = 23.75
Nobody has a stance quite like the mighty Shivnarine....

The great allrounder of his era, and one of a handful of the greatest bats of his time.

I feel slightly lucky that he didn't produce his very best, too often, against England. But I remember him as a really big wicket in 04-05 particularly.

Obviously, a legend. It'd be interesting to hear from a SAn, or someone who knows, where he is rated among other SAn sportspersons. I imagine he retires as their greatest ever cricketer.
I always say that everybody's right.

Kallis is a massively under rated batsman. Throughout most of his career it's been the Tendulkar, Ponting, Lara debate, Kallis averages more than all of these and has more tons in test cricket than both Ponting and Lara.

He is unargubaly the greatest cricketer of the modern era.

The Dravid of all-rounders? Goes about his brilliance quietly, is possibly a tad under appreciated, and doesn't stand out as much as flashier players (Sobers being flashy, as well as brilliant).
