If the police don't prosecute then the Ashes must be a certainty. Not sure if he is, what are the precedents?

Warner got a shortish ban for belting a fellow player, but there was no criminal action as Root didn't want to take it further and the two made up the next day.

Surely the Aussies want him out there to take the piss, and at least make it a half decent contest.

If Stokes plays the first test at the Gabba, then he will have effectively been banned for 2 ODI games for England, which he would not have played having injured his hand hitting a person.

2 game ban, seems pretty light, even if the other person decides not to press charges. The footage looks bad for the Stokes and the ECB. Surely the ECB would have to impose a stronger ban than that?

I think the ECB will select him - only problem might be if he gets charged and any criminal proceedings clash with the Ashes series. What's needed is either a very swift resolution or to kick ( for want of a better word!) it into the long grass.

On the face of it, Warner's misdemeanor was worse, he punched a fellow professional, Stokes' punched some bottle welding scrote.

The Ashes or what the cricket public want is totally irrelevant to the police investigation. If Stokes is charged with a serious criminal offence it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility he’ll be required to surrender his passport - there are any number of scenarios which might pan out.
I’ll shut up now and wait and see what transpires.

This is what the Bar operations manager said of the Warner Root incident.

None of the group seemed to have been drinking to excess, and all were just having a good time,” said John Creighton, the bar’s operations manager. “There was a small altercation between Warner and Root, you can see on the [CCTV] footage Root move back, but this was dealt with very amicably and quickly by the rest of the group, and both were calmly chatting to each other again immediately afterwards. They all left a short while later, and the small bar tab was picked up by David Warner.”

Does not sound quite as bad.

He still punched a fellow professional, a glancing blow maybe, but intent was there.

If Stokes gets prosecuted then fair enough he must deal with the consequences and then I guess he would get a cricket ban. Mind you if I got done for ABH, and it didn't involve a custodial sentence, I'm not sure my employers could take any action.

I'm not overly concerned by either incident, Warner has learnt his lesson, turned his life around, and I thought he was brilliant with the crowd during the subsequent Ashes series. I hope Stokes doesn't miss the Ashes, and he can have the same banter with the Aussie crowd. He may need to get some help like Warner.

I doubt it, all the crims are already out there.

I know that joke has been done to death!

Having to play in front of the Aussie crowds might be more of a punishment than being allowed to keep a low profile at home! Although the chances of him getting through 5 games without getting banned aren't great.

Too true, especially with him being part Englishman part New Zealander.

Mind you the stereotypical Australian will be able to empathise with his bar brawling antics!

I think the ECB might consider banning him, so they can roll out the excuse when we lose 5-0, that it was an under strength England team!

 Yep! Can't see England having much of a chance if he's not playing so if he's not there that will be the excuse for the inevitable disaster.

The press coverage today is interesting. Virtually all of it suggests he is unlikely to make the Ashes tour. Would be a huge call if the decision is purely down to the ECB - I'd have thought the only way he'd miss out would be if he can not tour for legal reasons.

Aussie media are having a ball...... they must be really scared of Stokes

interesting that they seem to be suggesting that Warner got some sort of massive ban/lengthy punishment, but I don't remember him missing much cricket at all

might just be my memory, of course

Think he just missed a few one day games and then a few weeks later was back for the start of the tests.
