Big Three take over ICC?

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

'The WICB's hurried revision of its international schedule to fit in two Tests in India that ensured Sachin Tendulkar's emotional farewell in his homeland rather than in South Africa, further fortified the rapport. As the BCCI has made plain, it will rapidly sour should the WICB oppose the triumvirate's proposals. It is a certainty seemingly recognised by "an overwhelming majority" of the Bangladesh board's directors, who, according to a report on ESPNcricinfo, favour siding with the BCCI or otherwise "will be cornered", a phrase applicable to the WICB....For West Indies, perhaps the most ominous point in the proposals is that "no member should be forced to host uneconomic tours". "Uneconomic" is a term that has come to be associated with a team consistently languishing in the bottom half of the ICC's Test and ODI standings for nearly 20 years....The upshot is that, come Tuesday and Wednesday in Dubai, the WICB, even against its principles, will support the radical makeover put forward by Australia, England and India. It couldn't have happened 30 years ago.'

'The PCB has strongly opposed the move to revamp the global game and called it "neither in line with principle of equity nor in the interest of game of cricket". The announcement came after a meeting of its governing board, presided by PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, who had been present at the ICC meeting in Dubai last week to discuss the radical proposals which will give the Big Three countries a larger portion of ICC revenues and more of a say in the game's administration.'

I doubt that , mike. Redistribution of funds - hopefully with more to go around for everyone (?) , dumping a WCT that was never going to happen , giving an opportunity for Associates to step up to Test status...getting rid of a future tours programme that seemed more honoured in the breach than the observance...disaster ?

The only real issue is the concentration of power in the hands of the few : but considering under the existing system many decisions are effectively decided by how many small boards are beholden to Indian largesse and therefore somewhat influenced in their voting , it may be that having BCCI inside the tent p...ing out may be preferable - and since they may find England and Australia less bribable they may be forced to negotiate a bit more in the reduced small committee...who knows , it may even make for better governance ...whatever , this is the new order . Perhaps we should wait and see what actually happens before we declare the apocalypse ...

The ICC confirmed that the proposed World Test Championship would be scrapped and replaced with the Champions Trophy in 2017 and 2021 to strengthen their commercial property. "It proved impossible to come up with a format for a four-team finals event in Test cricket that fits the culture of Test cricket and preserves the integrity of the format," its release said. "The most recent ICC Champions Trophy event proved to be very popular with supporters around the world and the future events will build on this success.

The proposal has been confirmed, it will happen, and apparently sri lanka will be the first side to visit one of the 'big 3' in a test series tour.

The first move:

BCCI rules the world, Srinivasan to be ICC chairman from July

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/spor ... 069873.cms

Reflecting the changed equation, BCCI president N Srinivasan is set to become the first ICC chairman from July, making him the most powerful man in world cricket.
=======================================================================================
As expected, BCCI's person gets the most powerful position , but not CA or ECB one.Basically now every cricket tour is now under control of BCCI, ECB and CA.World Cricket :lmao :facepalm

The ICC Board also paved a clearer path for high-performing Associate nations to gain Test status. "The winner of the next ICC Intercontinental Cup will be entitled to take part in a play-off against the bottom-ranked Full Member and, if successful, obtain Test status," the ICC said. "This complements the pathways that are already in place for any Member to be able to qualify for the major events in ODI and T20I cricket."

England could be in trouble. ;) In all seriousness, a play-off between Zimbabwe and Ireland or Afghanistan would be quite interesting.

Not necessarily. It's all subject to approval by the ICC's full council which, according to the Sunday Telegraph, could be during the World T20 Finals in early April or at the ICC's annual meeting this summer.

Perhaps sense will yet prevail.

Also from the Telegraph...

"The move has been condemned by Transparency International, a non-governmental organisation that monitors and publicises corporate and political corruption, and Lord Woolf, the former Lord Chief Justice who was commissioned in 2011 to report on the ICC's governance."

"Many members will be effectively disenfranchised," Transparency International said. "The intention to entrench a privileged position for the Big Three appears to be an abuse of entrusted power for private gain, giving them disproportionate, unaccountable and unchallengeable authority."

That last bit could make one think the BCCI was behind all this. Oh, hang on a minute...

The idea that beating Zimbabwe is somehow an acid test for whether a country is ready for Test cricket is somewhat laughable.

In the last decade Zimbabwe and Bangladesh have won just eight tests between them.

While there does need to be an improved path for Test membership, in order to be a test side you have to be much better than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

If the other nations take test cricket seriously and fully utilise the test match fund, then they too will receive larger revenue streams.

Bigger amounts (maybe) but smaller proportions for the "Small 7" then? That should be a recipe for harmony going forward.

Some of the "Small 7" are only happy to whore their players out for the IPL, even going as far as replacing a test series with an ODI tri-series involving India. Half the test nations are capable of hosting international cricket in April, so if the "Small 7" want to generate some income then arrange a series for then.
