The job spec says you have to have coached at fc level, so that lets out the wild cards.

Which is fair enough. I do have some regard for how Collingwood so quickly turned around his team, although as captain. If we did go for an overseas boss, Colly might be a good pick to work with him. With a less established figure like Giles, having someone like the Durham man might be a bit too much of a competitor. Though I suppose it depends on how the individuals respond. Being a new coach with a rival in situ doesn't feel that secure a position.

Will you pick the whole of the Yorkshire team or none of it?

if he was a durham man, the answer would be 'only the ones we have good cover for'

He'll have the advantage, though, of not having Pietersen in the camp. Giles does seem to be the front runner at the moment.

Being after a sole director across all formats means they've either got to make Giles redundant or give him the overall job. The way Flower has been retained but in an unspecified role indicates to me that they're going through the motions and nothing much is going to change. Giles figuratively in overall charge with Flower still having a significant role but being out of the public eye.The insistence on having 1st class coaching experience rules out any recent England captain or experienced ex-player like Collingwood.

Giles' chances will possibly depend on how England get on in his two assignments coming up. If there is no clear improvement then it may be a tough justification to make should they a appoint him

Giles might not live or die on the Windies warm up and t20 Cup ; but a few signs of progress wouldn't hurt his cause...

Think he remains favourite. In a way it would be hard on him to be overlooked now , as he has been seen to serve an apprenticeship under Flower , and has never really had a full strength team to direct yet. Which shouldn't prevent a truly outstanding candidate ousting him : but is there one such ?

Wouldn't really be right ot judge him on this tour when he has the T20 side playing the ODIs. So them we'd be judging him on some T20s. Having said that, Ireland won...

I think in just about every ODI series Giles has had to manage with a depleted squad so it would be unfair to condemn him on a less than impressive record. The key factor imo is selection and I'm less than impressed with the latest addition. Do need also a separate director and selectors for T20and Colly should have a key role in that set up.

apparently it's been reported in India that he has had talks with the BCCI...rumours that Fletcher will be sacked and Flower brought in....would suprise me as he wanted to only manage one format to ease the workload but i s'pose it could happen..

That didn't seem to be Giles' public view a few weeks ago. He thought Pietersen was an advantage - or so he indicated!

There were, of course, umpteen other players in the dressing room - cant sort out one man - pathetic - if indeed he did need sorting out. I still find the term reintegration absolutely laughable - they are grown men and paid well - just get on with the job!

Good luck to whoever get the job - hopefully they will give the players proper responsibility both on and off the pitch, whether it's tactics, behaviour, or performance.

Just shows that you can't always believe what people say in public.

I'd agree that everyone should just get on with their job, but not with the idea that managing Pietersen should have been an easy task (or even possible, perhaps).

Andy Flower is technical director at the ECB. He wasn't sacked, he was promoted! He remains a remote yet ruthless adversary, like Moriarty. You can't get to see him, yet his influence is everywhere. And no body is ever found.

I read that piece yesterday. It tended to wander a bit, I thought, all it was not unamusing.
