This is the right place for a rant about the ECB (who incidentally seem to be making themselves even less popular with their organisation of the new T20 competition https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/ ... ts-cricket). As well as their treatment of Durham and Harrison and Strauss telling Root how to play the game. And Harrison's Fast Show type executive double talk.

i'm happy to have a rant at the ECB when its justified, i'm hardly their biggest fan

just thought this was a bit of a strange topic to do it about

how dare they try to get the best deal they can from broadcasters !

By the way not a rant about them getting a best deal just not sure it is realistic to expect billion pounds for the rights.
That is a pretty serious fiqure for ecb to expect that at an early stage.

Hopefully there will be a much needed boost to fta exposure. If you can boost something from zero. If the new T20 competition is going to work, it just has to be on fta and feature the England players.

the weirdest thing for me about the new t20 proposal is that they will still run the t20 blast as well

i know they will not be in direct competition from a scheduling point of view but will do for overseas players and it can only impact the attendances at the t20 blast

Don't want to get caught between Rich and Bhaves and a conflict of views ;) but I'm not sure getting as much money as they can from rival broadcasters is necessarily their ultimate objective. Their goal is surely to allow the game to become at least as supported as it was when they got their hands on it. And then grow from there.

I wonder if people like Clarke and Harrison are getting bonuses for this kind of myopic shooting of barrelled fish.

Also their is a upper limit of what bt sport and sky want to pay.
It is a fact both companies would want to pay the least amount they would like for the rights.
Not sure both parties will go all out like the football rights.

all i am saying is that they will have put out feelers to try and see how much people might be willing to spend

thats how things work in the real world

they might be over-estimating and trying to force some sort of bidding war between SKY and BT, they might even know of other interested bidders as well given discovery's attempts to become more of a player

so its hardly "living in a fantasy world" as even the ECB wont just pick a completely unrealistic figure out of the air, they do talk to broadcasters about this stuff

The thing I most regret about the new competition is that the CC was cut back to make room for it. I've also read (I can't definitely say it's true) that domestic competition will carry on during the T20 franchise, without the players signed up for the new competition. What a slap for county members that would be, and the tradition of county cricket.

I don't mind there being the county based T20 and then a new city based competition, other than it unsustainably crowds the summer fixtures and impacts on the existing structure. I expect the new T20 Cup will get certain advantages but I wouldn't be surprised if more people want to watch the existing county based Blast. What'll be interesting is if the ECB then nobble the Blast in order to give the new cup more of an advantage. I wouldn't be surprised.

Well whatever ecb gameplan is they have to hope the deal is worth a billion now would be embarrassing if it only got signed for 500-750m
What we haven't considered yet is that this could all be Charles sale type nonsense.
Media predictions for rights values and who won them can be so hopelessly wrong at an early stage.

I'm not even suggesting that a Satellite broadcaster put the new T20 on fta, I think the ECB really needs one of ITV/BBC/C4 to run with it. It will have far more exposure that way. I think their objectives will fail on Sky/BT. But Harrison has said cricket is not a fta sport (what that means other than prejudice or short sightedness I'm not sure).

If the ECB board was really the free market loving greed-is-good ideologues that they resemble, maybe they would allow the counties to negotiate their own rights, and they could either sell alone or choose to create a package with other counties and we'd have more cricket on a greater number of stations. But that would give the ECB less power.
