Some notes from sale on the rights, although not saying much.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... -deal.html
The biggest task facing the England Cricket Board in their upcoming TV rights tender for all their properties from 2020 will be persuading BT Sport that the auction will be staged on a level playing field.

The concern inside BT is that they will be treated merely as a stalking horse to get more money out of rivals Sky Sports.

And the ECB's desire for eight games from the flagship city-based T20 tournament being on terrestrial TV doesn't tally with extracting maximum money from pay TV operators, who only fully open their chequebooks for exclusivity.

Yes that last point hasn't been made clear yet.

Ollie Rayner suggesting in the Guardian that the story about Jack Leach's action was leaked to save the selectors from criticism for the selection of the squad to tour India. Affirms that they only did the tests to help gather statistics on spin bowling. Describes himself as being furious.

Can't imagine he won't receive a call from Der Gruppencomma Strauss about this. If he hasn't already.

Yeah doubt ecb getting a billion pounds and fta coverage.
Actually surprised sale didn't mention anything about price or packages yet.

We have no ambition to be the richest, most irrelevant sport in this country.

Says Tom Harrison. Against all available evidence.

This flakeof self doubt by the ECB is unexpected though long long overdue.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/ ... air-tv-ecb

Though no international cricket is likely to feature and just a handful of T20 (including nearly 50% women's games) in a competition that doesn't even exist.

Though my dislike of the ECB is now so profound and entrenched, I'm not even sure if I'd want to support one of their venue streams even if it was on fta anymore.

Back to leaking documents I see. Like it's 2014 all over again. Feels too soon for nostalgia.

Sale not that optimistic that ECB will get its 1 billion tv rights target.
don't blame him really not sure how ECB can expect big money in top of having FTA coverage, plus ECB sound a bit desperate in a few Telagraph articles.

ECB would have done really well if they do get a billion pounds for the rights.

Although in the recent Sale article he mentions ECB getting 440 over 6 years and them wanting the deal to be doubled in the next tender which would be 880M over 6 years.

will go from £75M a year to £230-250M a year.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2017 ... ll-rights/
They living at a different planet if they think the deal will reach the billion mark.
reckon ECB will get around 750M, still a massive increase from the current deal of £375M.

not sure ECB should expect 300% price increase on the rights considering outside football most of the other rights have only increased by 70% since BT Sports inclusion.

sorry for bumping this but wonder if Bhav noticed how much the ECB got for its new TV deal :halo:

yeah very good deal for ECB.
1.1 Billion is crazy money and FTA coverage as well for BBC.
BBC might have gotten a bargain if the price is correct around 10M a year for highlights, live cricket and county clips is a bargain.
What Sky paid is crazy though, especially if the bbc figure is correct.
Sky probably paying 200-210 M a year for the rights.
Wonder where all the money will go, especially considering ECB get 60-80M a year now.
expected to get 3-5 times more money in a single year and should make a profit irrespective of whether india tour now, sky deal should certainly pay all the losses ecb currently get whenever a summer without Australia or india occur.

Do wish the counties get most of the money now, since not sure what else ECB can spend more money on apart from the counties and the grassroots on which the counties are very crucial in developing cricketers.

for once we agree

this is a great deal for the ECB and they need to use it wisely

Nice to see one of my prediction from ages ago come true.
when you have fierce competition from 2 pay providers it makes it so much easier to have FTA coverage, it was crazy talk 5-6 yrs ago when people always mentioned if sky don't get the exclusive deal the rights will fall by 50-70%. well that is crap considering now Sky paying 300% more and they don't even have it exclusively anymore.

Did always think T20 international was going to be FTA as well.

Wonder if you heard the scottish football quote.
someone compared to what sky or ECB get on the cricket and what scottish football get.

£220m a year - what the ECB will get each year from 2020.

£19m a year - what the SPFL gets a year.

Cricket: 11.58 x more valuable to TV.

looking at twitter Scottish folks not happy.
Don't blame them though considering Scottish football get a very bad deal since they don't even have a home nation broadcaster interested in the rights, unlike other eastern European countries.

Scottish Football is a one team procession at present, and you have to go all the way back to 1985 to find another team other than Rangers or Celtic as winners.

Not to mention the football is dire most of the time. 19 million is too much for the SPL :rasta

might keep an eye out for the tv ratings for england games this year.
if they are still in decline or still low ECB will be under pressure when the new tv deals starts and would need the new t20 comp to be a success straight away it can't afford a slow start like the big bash, plus if the competition is 100% like the big bash not sure it would work here, frankly speaking I don't actually think vast majority of the population would want to watch a substandard competition, lets get the fact right big bash quality isn't actually that great, hardly top international barring a few west indian and maybe a few english players like buttler etc but vast majority are generally average international like Luke wright, joe denly etc top of that the best australian players don't play, it only really works because the tickets are cheap, great weather and australian love the cricket and it normally doesn't clash with any meaningful international if anything in recent times the big bash has been a greater draw than the one day international being played at the same time.
doubt we would see that phenomenon in england where the domestic t20 stuff is a greather draw that england one day games.

if the ratings for england international continue to fall and the new t20 competition fails to be anything better than the blast, then it would be very unlikely Sky would put a billion pound bid again.

not the greatest source of information.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricke ... -fans.html
"Augusta National's acceptance of a take-it-or-leave-it offer from Sky that has been on the table for months for live coverage of this year's Masters golf demonstrates again that Sky are no longer prepared to bid over the odds for sports rights.

The Isleworth strategy is now to pay only what they believe the contract is worth — even if it means losing out on the rights, as they did with the US PGA Championship last year.

This could have huge repercussions for the Premier League in the current tender as there is no way Sky will offer £11m a match again. That is especially true given that BT Sport, with whom they now have a carriage deal to broadcast on each other's platforms, will be content simply to regain their current packages."

"The average live viewing figure for BT Sport's coverage of the Ashes was a disappointing 84,000 — not helped by the dull final Test in Sydney attracting an average of just 69,000 overnight viewers.

A BT spokeswoman said the figures would be boosted by those watching highlights on their app and website. But if Sky don't improve on BT's numbers when they show England's upcoming tour of New Zealand, cricket has a serious problem."
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... p-tie.html

number for bt sport were not that great, probably didn't help that the cricket was dull and england didn't play well, if something similar happens for NZ then Sky would be a bit worried with the way cricket is going considering it is Sky 2nd most expensive sport at the moment.
