Day-Night Test cricket

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Day-Night Test cricket

Postby Hampshire » Mon Jun 30, 2014 4:24 pm

Just saw Australia and New Zealand are planning the first day night test for 2015 and wondered what peoples opinions were on it? I personally think it's a very good idea give the amount of matches that fall on working days currently, most likely reducing the crowds.

I guess judging from other comments in the past that the standard of the ball would have to increase.

I don't mind the idea in other countries.

Wouldn't like to see it in England although attendances are pretty good anyway over here generally.

Dead against it. I don't actually think there should be any floodlit sports events until we have reduced our reliance on fossil fuels to practically zero. We're told we should save a few watts by switching things off at night, yet here we are using something like 500kW to watch people play with a ball. What rubbish!

We've seen in one day games how the light can influence how the ball reacts, so a team batting under lights more than the other team is at a disadvantage. Dooont like the idea anyway.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

This is where the game is heading thanks to the influence of T20.

I really really hope this is a one off.

And yet we are always complaining, often rightly, when play is reduced due to bad light.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist, and not that keen on t20, but given some of the dwindling attendances around the world for Test cricket, the need for people to take time off work and so on, then it may not be a bad thing.

The public attending Test cricket in this country seem to get a pretty raw deal - I don't go simply because of the expense, both of tickets and getting to a ground and the possibility of play being curtailed or none at all.

I think there needs to be consideration of a range of measures to ensure the paying public get value for money - perhaps day/night Test cricket should at least be considered amongst them.

20/20 CRICKET NEEDS TO BE DAY/NIGHT STUFF TO ENSURE ATTENDANCE AND BECAUSE THE CROWD WANT TO SEE A RESULT -------- THOSE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SEE TEST CRICKET WILL GO ANYWAY BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED TO SEE A RESULT BUT GO TO SEE SOMEONE SPECIAL LIKE WARNE OR TENDULKAR.
TO IMPROVE ATTENDANCES REDUCE PRICES AND INCREASE THE OVER RATE.

I read about this too. I'm not surprised that they are going to give it a run, but I'm not jumping over the moon about it as a permanent fixture.

This will do nothing to improve the poor crowds coming out for Tests in the Caribbean....

There may well be scope for Day/Night test cricket in the sub-continent. Whenever England are touring, matches would start 8-9am GMT which will improve audiences back home.

Never really thought about it like that, a VERY good point.

Stick some solar panels on the floodlights to off-set the energy use, problem solved.
