A Sydney Thunder player has been injured, playing grade cricket, in a very similar incident to the one that took Phil Hughes. Daniel Hughes (no relation) was struck in the back of the neck, knocked out and rushed to hospital.

No lasting damage, but it sounds like he was very lucky.

They really need to do something.about.the helmets. Safety over comfort for once, I hope.

I don't really see what they can do. Adding further coverage down the back of the neck would reduce maneuverability and risks injury if players fall over, both of which are dangerous.

Part of this is coaching, getting players to stop turning their head away from the short ball, and part of it is the increased news coverage.

I have been surprised at how emotional I have been at watching/reading some of the tributes/commemorations to/for him. I suppose that underlying all of this is just how much it affected cricket worldwide, but also just how much of an "ownership" mugpunters attach to elite sportspeople..

I am not a great one for trite (it is one letter away from tripe, after all), especially when it is dealing with emotions. However, Geoff Lemon's article on how Hughes' death has affected certain team-mates is mostly very good and well worth the read.

Maybe the impact it might have had in changing people's aggression on the pitch has passed.

Maybe for Aussie cricketers a little like Hillsborough for UK football fans; where you encounter death in a pastime that is supposed to be recreation. Though for cricketers, they must carry around the idea of serious injury with them all the time.

Although other sports are more dangerous, cricket is like boxing in that the injury is brought on by an intended physical threat.

Helmets are now compulsory for keepers, batters, and fielders within eight yards of the stumps in UK professional cricket. They also have to be worn by under eighteens in non-pro games.

I see that the ECB are going for compulsory helmets, for batsmen, keepers standing up, and any fielder within 8 yards (is it?) of the batsman

hard to believe that it's been a year

thank you for posting it, didn't wanna post it earlier since I thought it wouldn't be nice talking about what happened, especially with me disagreeing with a lot of the allegation on day 1.
it is ridiculous for the family to blame bollinger for sledging or some of the other noscence.

Not sure Hadding, Bollinger played any part in what happened to hughes, so I have no idea why these players are going through this.
Anyway don't wanna go into much detail in this since I don't wanna offend people.

But really most of the inquest should be done on what they can do to stop it happening again not blame people.
