Saw this lovely tribute on Twitter:

"Vale Phillip Hughes.
Resumes play on 63 not out with a new batting partner."

I was genuinely upset this morning. It had not crossed my mind that he might not pull through. I've been shocked all day.

Phil and Ed Cowan were eating my sweeties only last year. When pundits and fans were talking incessantly about his difficulties in playing the short ball, who could possibly have imagined that it would lead to this.

Terrible news. It's been a long time since anything has affected me as much as this news has.

Still doesn't make any sense

I guess we all feel the same, Durham. Seeing all the boards and the responses, it seems that its touched every cricket fan the world over. If there is a legacy that is positive from this, its nice to see that our little sport we love still can come together as a community and mourn a lost talent.

I can't think of another accident in professional cricket that resulted in the death of a player. He was a very talented cricketer but above all, it appears, an even better man. It is very sad and coupled with the sympathy we would all extend to his family and friends we must spare a thought for Sean Abbott who must be in turmoil right now.

The news today of Hughes’ passing has been hard to process. From the early reports it was clear that the injury was very serious, but today’s news feels like a bad dream. While I remember Alcwyn Jenkins death following being hit in the head by a fielder’s throw in the South Wales leagues, this feels very different, similarly with Tom Maynard’s death.

It’s a truly tragic event and it’s very difficult to see how those directly affected will find their way in the game from here. Thoughts have to go to Abbott who will be in a place few can rationalise.

I don't know, sussex. The articles I've read have been along the lines of your post: a man of undoubted talent who had yet to fully realise it in the international arena. The greatest tragedy of all this is that now he will never get the chance to.

I agree with everything else you wrote, though.

As a side note, it's great to see how the community is rallying around Sean Abbott. No-one is blaming him, and neither should they, for what was a freak accident. I hope he gets a lot of support. I don't think I could go back if it were me.

Difficult to comprehend how someone could suffer a life ending injury on a cricket field...

Phil Hughes

Just heard Kevin Pietersen compare Phil Hughes' death with Tom Maynards, how utterly pathetic.

Phil Hughes died playing cricket in a freak accident, Tom Maynard decided to drive a car whilst over 4 times over the alcohol limit and having taken both cocaine and ecstasy.

Phil Hughes was an innocent man doing what he loved, Tom Maynard endangered many lives and cost himself his own, to compare the 2 is disgraceful and disrespectful to Phil Hughes.

Cheers, I agree with every word ( although I never met him ), I always think of him as a Hants player, even if he did only score 81 runs in 6 innings.
