Jonathan Trott retires from international cricket

From an Ashes-winning ton on debut to being the lone ranger on difficult pitches against a world class Pakistan attack to an Ashes-securing ton infront of 90K people at the MCG and a historic series-securing ton at Nagpur. The chief catalyst in arguably England's best period in ODI cricket in the last 2 decades, culminating in a Champions Trophy final, in which he was the second highest run-getter. England's best batsman in an otherwise dismal 2011 World Cup and a worthy mention of a 4th innings hundred in Sri Lanka at Galle in a losing cause, the innings that inspired England's resurgence in the next test to level the series.

Thanks for the memories, Trotty. Will definitely miss your scratching of the guard, immense powers of concentration, those lovely flicks through midwicket and those handsome cover drives. A modern day English great, who ends his career with an ODI average in excess of 50. And an absolute gentleman. A true hero for coming back from your stress illness, just a shame that it didn't quite go to plan. Deserved a much better ending but doesn't take anything away from your contributions to English cricket over the last half a decade. A true gem...

He may have jumped before he was pushed but he was a good player for England before his problems.

Well said Shanky. Shame he went as most do, on a low. But a particular favourite of mine, and the best England number three in my lifetime. Best wishes to him, and thanks for the memories.

As a Windies fan, I felt a lift when I heard he had been picked to play against us...I just didn't think he was ready.

Also, like Dujon, I do have to question his insistence on walking down the wicket to the pacer.

It's unfortunate for Trott, but lucky for the West Indies, that he was picked for this series.

Well played Trotty and thanks. Excellent summary of his England career.

I think he signed a 3 year contract for Warks fairly recently - haven't checked - but they'll welcome him back with open arms. County games don't carry the same intensity or pressure as Test cricket and he's already scored heavily in that arena which is one of the reasons he was brought back.

Many people at work drop down a peg or two in order to sustain a living - nothing wrong in that.

I'm sure everyone wishes him well.

before the first test, I dismissed the talk of Trotty opening as nonsense, because it made absolutely no sense. All it has done is to finally end his career once and for all, and leave England either with an opener for the first NZ test who has had no time in the middle, or an opener who has had time in the middle but was deemed as not having the 'right stuff' by the end of the India series last year, or some other opener with no international experience who they might have to take a punt on before going into the boilerkeg of an international summer.

Can't say I'm surprised, but the selectors did him no favours by shoehorning him into the opener's spot, which is not his natural place. What a shame his comeback was not to be, but time to move on.

Any player averaging over 45 is a big loss to yeam when he retires. Tough to replace players who have had such a good test career overall. Well played. A proper number 3 technically, temperamentally etc.
Even in ODI he gave average which is excellent even for test career average.

IJLT has commented on how arduous the back to back Ashes were, and how tired and stressed the dressing room was. It'll be interesting if he expands on that on retiring.
