I knew he'd been poorly (did he have a fall or something?) but had seemingly been in good spirits, I believe

became a trans dart board in latter years, but that never bothered me and I always liked him. A very smart, thinking comedian

Never really appreciated Barry when I was younger, but find him funny and witty in later years. One of us has changed.

he died following complications from his hip surgery in March after suffering a fall in February

it occurs to me that if he'd been over here when he had that fall he might still be alive, because he would still have had another 18 month wait for that hip surgery and the subsequent complications. It was his own fault for living in a backward country who still think it's a good idea to do surgery as soon as it's needed rather than making people wait until they've had a chance to die of other causes to save money. Basic schoolboy error

I am not one for going back decades to find fault in things that modern culture would not tolerate, and in this specific example, I am not even sure you would get much of a consensus on what "right" is between various advocates of different classes of people - nevertheless, I think Humphries volunteered to involve himself in a debate where his views were undoubtably offensive, and at that point, his career history becomes relevant. I find it difficult to understand someone who cross-dressed for most of their professional career, feeling the need to insult or offend people who also want to change their gender identity or play with the boundaries of gender expression. His position and career gave him a platform in the debate to have maybe had a positive influence - he instead, chose to use that platform to offend people ... his legacy has to bare that stain.

Singer/actor/producer/activist Harry Belafonte dies at 96.

Best known to me for classic noir Odds Against Tomorrow, and cult sci-fi, The World, the Flesh and the Devil.

Not as good a film, but Island in the Sun (1957) was significant in Hollywood for its interracial relationship between Belafonte and Joan Fontaine
