Personally, Brel covers (especially in English) never really capture the same essence as the originals; there is something about his Anderlecht twang that timbres his lyrics, which often translate into quite vague cliches, that misses the point. A lot like Piaf.... its not the same without her chavy, Bellevilleness, coming out everytime she rolls that R..... when they both get going, you can almost smell the chip grease, stale cigarette smoke and beer soaked carpet of the old chanson hall.

Agree with this (although I guess it probably belongs on the music thread !) . I did see a French woman whose name escapes me at the moment who did some excellent Brel covers at a festival a few years back (will have to go back to her CD now I'm reminded) : but generally this really is a case of you can't match the original...

The language will be an impediment for many (including myself). The translations Scott Walker used were very good and presumably by a excellent lyricist. Shame Scott didn't do many more covers of Brel songs.

Aussie off spinner and handy lower order bat Bruce Yardley has died at 71. I remember him well from my early cricket watching days, a very Aussie looking (and named) player with long hair and 'tache, who bowled quickish spin and proved a bit of a WACA specialist.

A big spinner.

not sure how much he spun the ball, but he was a big bloke, I remember him well - visually, in that I can picture him and his bowling action in my mind, but know nothing about how good he was. A very 70's looking cricketer. A big, tall spinner, with a high arm-shuffle, a bit like that Seffer spinner of 15-20 years back Pat Symcox.

Had a long run up like Derek Underwood. Was it his number of wickets for an offie that Lyon broke, or Tim May?

Looked a bit of a larrikin.

No, it was Mallett! Yardley had fifty one wickets more than May and six fewer than Mallett.

Think this thread should carry a mention for Bob Hawke...probably more noted as Australia's greatest modern labour Prime Minister but also a man who loved his cricket.

Passing away on the very eve of the election in which his party is likely to return to office after several years in the cold and thereby rather overpowering last minute campaigning might be seen as a final act of political mastery...

He did a lot to bring Australia into the modern world and the country would be much poorer without his work. And a genuine man in a way that few of his successors can claim...RIP Bob.
