Cricket in the Olympics

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Cricket in the Olympics

Postby The Professor » Tue Oct 27, 2015 6:20 pm

Story has been bubbling for a while but Waugh and Tendulkar's jaunt in the US has brought it back up again.

Think it will happen?

Think it's a good idea?

Will it be yet another T20 fest and be a further nail in the coffin of the test game?
"It has been said of the unseen army of the dead, on their everlasting march, that when they are passing a rural cricket ground the Englishman falls out of the ranks for a moment to look over the gate and smile."

T20 will suit the Olympics fine, and it will at least be a medal China or the USA won't win!

It's essential for the future of the game. Maybe the T20 will grow almost to be its own sport, and Test cricket will carry on as a separate entity. But if cricket relies on its traditional hinterland, it will fade away as a global sport.

Should there be interest in the game stimulated by the Olympics, the Indian/etc global diaspora gives the game a better than average chance to take hold.

im of the opinion that the olympics should be the pinaccle of all the sports that are part of it

therefore cricket shouldnt be in it (same with football/golf/tennis etc)

Supposedly their may be a small rift happening.
Basically IOC want Cricket for one reason get India/Sub C into the Market.
They get cricket and money should increase from Sub C in future rights/Events.
They only gonna accept cricket if India and the big players participate.

ICC doesn't want Big players taking part their essentially want a format/competition where lesser players take part.
ECB are supposedly keen on the olympics but they generally are the one losing out the most if it does happen and Graves is keen but not sure on the politics of ECB right now so don't really know what ECB are doing on this front.
BCCI are supposedly against it for one reason Player rights and legalities of sponsors and stuff really minor stuff that can be sorted out although if they did join IOC Wada doping thing might become an issue again.
They only really against it because ECB didn't want it in the past, Can't think of any major issue they have with it even the Control aspect is not valid since they only lose control for 2 weeks every 4 years.

In summary chances are ICC is only gonna offer a comp without big players either under 19 or under 23 and may not even be a proper format.
IOC might only accept it if big players enter since their literally only want it to break the Sub C market.
Really can't see ECB/BCCI accepting the terms.
Graves might be a fan of it but got a feeling his board might not have the same opinion.

Wouldn't surprised me if after the film Death of a gentlemen the Big 3 Decided to pursue olympic cricket and then see IOC reject it.
the blame would then shift on the IOC and not ICC and if the IOC accepted it no loss to the Boards and possible gains if new nations actually do get better.

If it was an under 19 or under 23 competition does anyone know if the Counties will lose out and be able to cope with it.

Yeah, true, but at least the best players play, unlike in Football.

The World Twenty20 becoming a four year event from 2016, along with the Olympics normally held in late July-August (outside of most test nations playing seasons) makes T20 cricket as an Olympic event a no brainer.

As for the ECB claiming of financial implications because the Olympics clashes with the English Domestic season, utter rubbish. England can still hold test matches and still put out strong squads for both test cricket and Olympic Twenty20.

good article on the Olympics.
As predicted might just be a show to improve the images of the ICC and ECB/Big 3.

That is the biggest stumbling block...all the superstars in the India team would have to accept WADA's out-of-competition testing rules, and there's no compromise there. If Usain Bolt can accept it, then WADA expects all cricketers to do the same.

Right now, cricket's drug-testing regime is a joke.

Yeah really hope cricketers don't do any doping.
Like you say cricket doping testing programme is a joke.
But then again Cricket doesn't really benefit from doping so maybe cricketers are clean.
believe they didn't like the whereabouts clause that wada are strict about.
