The Bangladesh Tour

Postby Aidan11 » Sat Sep 10, 2016 6:58 pm

Thought there was a thread on this but I can't find one.

Anyway security is still a major issue and Eoin Morgan is the first cricketer to admit he doesn't want to go. As a result Jos Buttler has been made captain of the One Day side. Hales is still unsure whether or not he will go.

Personally I don't think the tour should go ahead. It's too risky.

Ironically there is an independent travel agents in Guiseley called Morgan International Travel, had a little chortle to myself when passing said establishment.

Same here, would prefer Root and Bairstow to play in Yorkshire's final two County Championship matches instead of resting for a nothing tour. I'm interested about security arrangements when it comes to airport transfers, according to a former work colleague who travelled to Bangladesh on business it is not as tight compared to a developed country.

I thought the squad was going to be announced today?

England players not born in England have usually suffered from a vindictive, suspicious press. Can you see Cook being criticised if he hadn't gone?

I thought Zimbabwe going to Pakistan was brave. Then we have Bayliss and Farbrace (injured) involved in a terrorist attack yet going on this tour. Broad, whose father was on the same team bus, would had concerns.

Squad is announced on Friday.

Holt's article was poor, but not as bad as Newman's.

As for the Morgan situation, how did Holt/Newman et al react when Strauss "waved the lads off from the airport" for the last tour of Bangladesh?

The Guardian seems to be implying Hales will lose his Test place in the longer term.

Hales must have very serious concerns to make this choice. If who ever comes in for him has a half decent Test series that's him out of the side probably for a very long time. His ODI place is likely safe regardless of how the replacement does given he's just become the owner of England's highest score in the format. Perhaps he's decided that he wants to become a one day specialist and this is an easy way to do so without having to go through the process of ruling himself out and closing that door forever?

Morgan is an interesting one. It would take something very special from Butter to usurp the captaincy from him regardless of what the press try to write, unless of course Strauss wants to move on from Morgan. He's likely not losing anything from this decision, though Strauss' disappointment comment is a little foreboding on top of his pressure in the press for the captains to tour.

I assume this means that everyone else has decided to go? It will certainly be an interesting squad. Test wise it's just an opener and a tour batsman, Hameed is getting a lot of press and I have made my thoughts on that clear elsewhere. Looking past him, you'd have Jennings and Lees as other choices and of course DBD or Westley from Division 2. The ODI squad is a bit more interesting. I'd assume Bairstow would be a straight sway for Morgan and the back up keeper. The opener however is likely Duckett, though DBD also did well for the Lions as did Mallan. Billing might get a place as a back up keeper / middle order bat. Maybe England could be really left field and play Willey where he bats domestically.

Ho hum.

I think I'm inclining to think well of Morgan and Hales for standing up to the pressure to do something they didn't think was reasonable, and which may well cost them. Given assurances made, they should be on the ODI tour of India, and I hope the selectors can be honest and take Hales in the Test squad, if he would have gone to BD, even if he loses his place in the side. Though I don't really trust the ECB to choose integrity over pragmatism.

Let's be blunt here, Hales just dropped himself from the Test side, unless the player coming in has a disastrous series. The ECB are, rightly, not going to make decisions based on a misplaced sense of honour for a player who wasn't guaranteed a place anyway.
