Indian Allrounders

Postby The Professor » Wed Oct 26, 2016 6:58 pm

It has long been said of the modern Indian team that when Kohli fails, India lose.

I think this is the fact because of the lack of a quality allrounder to hold things together in the middle. Today they tried Axar Patel to little effect.

Have India had a quality allrounders since the days of Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri?
"It has been said of the unseen army of the dead, on their everlasting march, that when they are passing a rural cricket ground the Englishman falls out of the ranks for a moment to look over the gate and smile."

Irfan Pathan was for a while

Praveen Kumar did well with the bat and ball as well.

Bhuvi has the potential if he works on his batting - he really could make a big difference.

Ashwin definitely is - Jadeja should be too but his batting seems to have gone downhill. Axar did ok today as well. Kulkarni has done pretty well as well.

Personally I'm disappointed that Rishi Dhawan has never been given a chance in Indian colours - we keep wasting time on Binny and Pandya instead.

I know you like rishi dhawan but he isn't special, batting is ok and bowling is ok, not really international class, out of the pace all rounders Hardik Pandya looks the best.
Also Dhawan did play 4 games for india, can't see Dhawan getting into the team unless he can bowl 10 overs or bat in the top 6.
Not sure what he brings to the side considering he can only really bowl 4-5 overs and bat at 8 or 9.

Dhawan really needs to be a slogger like Pandya to get into the one day team and his bowling is quite poor for a look in the test side plus Ashwin is the clear all rounder in the test team.

from all the all rounder Pandya looks the best option in the odi set up, but not really sure you need him if you got Jadeja, Ashwin, B Kumar, Shami, Bumrah etc in the attack.
not really sure you need a 6th bowling option that is affecting the batting balance.

presumably there is a question mark for the Champ trophy next year as to whether we play 2 spinners in June in Eng so maybe they are thinking Pandya instead of Jadeja - don't know

Champ trophy side is maybe:

Rohit
Dhawan/Vijay/Rahul
Kohli
Rahane
Dhoni
Pandey / Raina
Jadeja / Pandya
Ashwin
Bhuvi
Shami
Ishant / Umesh / Kulkarni

BTW - I think playing Rishi in tests for India A would have been an idea. When I was pushing for Bhuvi to be in the team about 2 or 3 years ago I was getting similar comments about him.

It would also help if the likes of Pandya, Rishi and even Umesh and Varun Aaron played a stint in county cricket to hone their game. Was it RP Singh or Zak who raved about the impact that playing county cricket had on his game

Was Zaheer Khan.
County cricket will be great, but not really sure Counties are interested in the players, would be nice if England actually invite india A over for a series though but not sure that would be beneficial either considering it will likely be couple of List A games on flat decks.

Think the biggest difference with bhuvi was that he actually does something with the ball.
Rishi dhawan offers nothing.
Should be remembered B Kumar made debut when he was 22 and impressed straight away, Dhawan been in the radar for a long time and never really impressed he actually remind me of the county legend all rounders that are so good at domestic level but don't have the batting or bowling skill to get into the national set up.

india did win champions trophy in june during 2013 with Jadeja/Ashwin both playing crucial roles.
Suspect india will play 2 spinners but they will only do so if the other 3 pace bowlers can bowl 30 good over.

From that list can only See Umesh Yadav/ Varun Aaron getting county stints and even then not sure they be many counties interested considering not many can afford them or many got spaces available.
plus Rishi Dhawan not even allowed to play county cricket and Pandya just about meet the requirements.

Think BCCI should schedule a A tour to NZ getting 3 or 4 first class games in NZ will be worth the same as a county cricket stint and 15-20 Indian players benefit rather than a select few.
Would Say England but lets be honest that will never happen.

true, much better batter in tests but in ODIs he doesn't ahve the power game. Jadeja is the more effective batter in ODIs

one of the other left armers had a stint at Leicester I think and was also much improved.

yeah he quite awful in limited overs cricket, actually most of india bowlers are awful in odi batting, they quite good in first class cricket but struggle in ODI cricket batting.
Mishra being a good example averages 22 in Test and 3 in ODI and struggling to make the team in ODI because he can't bat/field.

Can't really think of many bowlers that are good at slogging either.
only really pandya/Jadeja seems to fit the bill.
