Arthur Crabtree wrote:I did press the pedal down on their win, given the context of this thread. But even so, I don't think their win was one that demands a great deal of qualification, otherwise you just unnecessarily lose the joy of the event. There's no point standing on the terraces watching an epochal victory, shouting that they'll lose next time. Even though they will. You're right, but also maybe, arguably, missing the point a little. No one's suggesting they're comparable to the top sides.

I'm not missing the point, nor, am I missing the significance of the achievement. I am however growing a little tired of - not so much on here - hearing people talk about that win as if it is the second coming of Christ. A decidedly ugly side of Bangladeshi cricket has been exposed on this latest tour through sledging that was not apparent before and their hammering in their strongest disciplines by a weakened Kiwi side.

Perspective is important, and, it seems to have gone missing over the last month.

i kinda a little bit with M-S on this one

i think the significance of the bangladesh win was over-played a bit considering they came within 20 or so runs of beating us just the previous week

our weakness against spin was exposed by very helpful pitches, which was put in context a bit by what we did in India against a much stronger attack. yeah we collapsed to lose games in India but we also posted 400+ 3 times, something we never looked like doing in bangladesh.

Very good read, Arthur.

I confess to not feeling at all fuzzy and warm about the Bangladesh win. It was depressingly inevitable that it would be England who became the first side to lose to them, and even more depressingly inevitable that that loss would involve succumbing to the wily skills, craft and finely honed guile of an 18 year old playing in his debut series. Pathetic England.... every associate nation in the world must be hoping beyond hope to be drawn in the same group as England in any competition, because England are always the most likely team to grant them the opportunity to dine out for free for the rest of their lives on the back of an unlikely and thoroughly embarrassing shock win.

All that being said, good luck to Bangladesh on their award...... clearly more people felt differently to me,

Looks like I didn't get near the general mood. I did go back to get rid of the preachy third last part of the BDvEng, but someone else had posted by then and I didn't want to get an edited note. Nice to read the responses.

All the comments I made were flattering to the subject. Bairstow beat those records in about twice as many games as the former holders. Kohli's status as a limited overs match winner didn't actually win many 50 over matches for India last year. But I just thought unconditional praise fitted the subject better on this occasion!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread, Arthur, which was entirely down to your thoughtful presentation of the topic.

Hey no. I don't do intentional sarcasm towards fellow posters. It was intended as a friendly comment. Though it clicked later on how it might be taken.

Apologies for my stupidity.

And thanks for compeering the other thread.

No I know you don't!!

If I had read this though it would be a different state of affairs. Maybe would have even got Kohli to give you your prizes.
