Cook Retires

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Apparently when Cook became captain the sponsors were asked who they wanted.

I suspect, like the press, Cook, and everyone employed by the ECB were sold on the idea that absolute conformity was essential to allow English cricket the best chance to survive (though it's less clear how executive wages and Clarke's expenses fit into that necessity). That would make KP even less likely to be accommodated by the ECB, even without Flower's agenda.

Well, he's not captain any more. They can't sack him now :) .

Theoretically they could drop him (they dropped KP for being a bad influence, after all), but he's as close to undroppable as you get in the England set-up: highest run scorer ever, and no obvious competition. Even though Hameed and Jennings show promise, there are three top order spots to fill - I think most people are expecting a line-up of Cook, Hameed, Jennings, Root, Moeen, Stokes, Bairstow for the first test of the summer (with the bowling being Woakes, Broad, Anderson, and A N OTHER selected from Rashid, Finn or Wood).

So in order to be dropped, Cook would have to fail for an extended period (and given his proven ability, he'll be given more grace for a run of bad form than a new player would - we say he's passed his best, but he still scored 1200 runs at over 42 with 2 hundreds and 7 fifties in 2016, which is a poor year by his standards, but still acceptable), AND both Hameed and Jennings would have to succeed well enough to be in the team long term, AND we'd have to identify another opening or top-order batsman to fill the gap. I don't see all three coming to pass for a minimum of 18 months.

KP was highest run scorer when he was sacked!

Being just a batter now, it must be he is less likely to survive two years without a century, as he did.

Of course, Cook will have plenty of slack. My view is that he's past his best and tending to get runs with a low difficulty tariff now. I imagine he'll be given just a little more leeway than Ian Bell.

gonna be tight projection have him getting it in 2023 season but a decline in form because of age could see him getting it 2025 etc which would be age 40-42.
plus england are playing less test now they only average 11 a season till 2019 and after that the number should go down to 8-9.
england are scheduled to only play 5 or 6 in the home season in the new contract.

like on an Aus forum that I sometimes frequent - one poster in particular would comment on players extending their contracts with their club.

*Player* resigns!

A hyphen between the y and p makes such a difference.

There's a name for always making a grammatical error in a post in which you point out a grammatical error. Muphry's Law? Something like that.

I make so many, I wouldn't risk it.

Muphry's Law it is. Get in!

Quite an outpouring in the media of grateful deference for Lord Steely and his gracious captaincy.
