Afghanistan and Ireland awarded Test status

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

the main problems Ireland has the ICC cant really help with tho

it really just doesn't have the playerbase or the support within Ireland to sustain itself at the top level and i know i keep repeating this but without their players being able to develop within the English county system then they wouldn#t even be at the level they are

I agree with that. With out county cricket Ireland would not have a test team.

But the powers that be now think they are ready to have a test team. But they are a long way from being ready.

Perhaps we will see a few players come from SA, Aus, NZ and england to swell the ranks. Players who have a long lost Irish relative somewhere that will mean they can play test cricket even though they could not get anywhere near the test team in their own country. A few Trent Johnson type players?

Agreed....

I think it's a good move to give these two teams Test status. Now, it's up to the other teams to play them. It really doesn't matter if the Big Three don't want to play Tests against these teams. There are others who will want to play them....

We should be looking to spread Test cricket to other countries, not restrict it to a Boys' Club.

Afghanistan already hosts matches in UAE, where they get good support in LO matches from the large number of Afghan workers there. They probably won't get much support for the Tests, but that's no different from Pakistan in the UAE, and the West Indies in the West Indies....

I thought there had to be a fully functioning domestic league in place before test status could even be considered.

I thought that, but I think Zimbabwe only have two first class teams and that's their league.

Really don't agree with this decision, but sadly given the complete lack of a transition phase in the pathway to Test status it's either all or nothing. I'd have rather seen a 3 year plan where Ireland and Afghanistan play all of the A teams in 5 day cricket to get a true sense of where they are.

Right now, this does nothing but water down the quality of Test cricket, Ireland aren't all that good anymore and their domestic set up is a joke. I do wonder if there will be pressure from the ECB on Counties not to pick Irish players any more as it will be aiding another Test side. I'm equally curious as to how this is going to all work out, it seems beyond ludicrous to me that a Test nation can pick players who take no part in their own domestic competitions.

Also, let's face it, are any of the Test nations really going to have any interest in playing Ireland? The top teams will see it as a one sided, financial dead end. I can see the Asian teams having an interest in playing Afghanistan, but what exactly is the incentive being offered here?

Very poor decision by the ICC, but sadly the only one that could be made given their lack of proper preparations.

Afghanistan fully deserve considering they under19 and under 23 have beaten full number sides and are very competitive force.
Ireland shouldn't get it either.
Afghanistan meet the criteria in every way, players coming through, huge love for cricket and most likely going to be a success.
Not sure why Ireland getting it.

ICC probably feel bad for never giving Ireland a chance a few years ago when they were actually decent.

Not sure where England will play Ireland (I assume that sub con teams will be made to play Afghanistan).... who would pay to host that? Probably make Durham host all these matches... in May.... and just another crafty mill to the amount we owe
