I know it's a bit late but figured i'd give my series ratings

ENGLAND

Alistair Cook - 5 - dissapointing series only averaged 33, and no hundred, they are becoming few and far between now, need him firing for ashes
Keaton Jennings - 2 - no suprise to see him sent back to Durham
Gary Ballance - 4 - Bosses county cricket, but struggles too much at this level, and selectors should look elsewhere...alex hales maybe?
Joe Root - 10 - MOS - IMO man of series...what a start to captaincy for him, series win and 461 runs at 57, class act.
Jonny Bairstow - 10 - also a 10, Root sneaks MOS for captaincy...scored 330 runs at 41, and kept beautifully
Ben Stokes - 7 - solid with the bat, worries me that he dosen't take many wickets..only 7 in series and leaks runs...
Moeen Ali - 9 - would have been a 10, but still inconsistent with bat, had his best series with the ball, and always looked dangerous
Liam Dawson - 4 - struggled badly with the bat, actually bowled pretty well to be fair, just maybe not good enough for test cricket
Stuart Broad - 7 - 11 wickets in the series, and a rare half century
James Anderson - 10 - 20 wickets at 14, and still going at 35
Mark Wood - 0 - hate giving a noight, but one wickrt at 197 is horrendous, and people are leaping infront of him...shame injuries are taking their toll
Tom Wesltey - 6 - got a half century and gets starts needs to kick on though
Dawid Malan - 1 - 35 runs in 4 innings, not good enough...stunned he's playing against the west indies
Toby Roland-Jones - 9 - dream debut, struggled in 2nd test, but deserves a run after his debut performance

SOUTH AFRICA

Dean Elgar - 6
Heino Kuhn - 2 - 123 runs at 15, very similiar series to Jennings..Jennings may come again, but i think thats it for Kuhn
Hashim Amla - 8 - 329 runs at 41
JP Duminy - 1 - discarded early in the series, and i think he is done at test level
Temba Bavuma - 6 - 262 runs at 32, gets starts but needs to convert to bigger scores, think he will stay at no4 now which is good move
Theinus de Buryn - 3 - nothing to really write home about
Kagiso Rabada - 8 - 16 wickets at 28, haul more impresive considering he only played 3 of the tsts
Quinton Du Kock - 5 - 2 half centuries, they don't know where to bat him...took some stunners, but also dropped some sitters..mixed series for him
Vernon Philander - 9
Morne Morkel - 8
Keshav Maharaj - 8 - A real find in the spin bowling department for SA
Faf Du Plessis - 6
Chris Morris - 6
Duane Olvieir - 8

Good stuff Andy. Thanks for that. A zero is a bit of an ouch!

One or two disagreements. Morkel bowled better than Rabada. I think you have been a little harsh on Cook whose innings at the Oval was invaluable and just what was needed after the debacle at Nottingham. Personally I wouldn't give any 10's for that series.

always gonna be disagreements, but yeah i take your points....your right about Morkel, rabada my apolgies...however i won't change stance on Cook...1 or 2 good knocks all series, we need more from our openers particuarly him...we need his hundreds back and he is still more than capable of getting them..

If Cook hadn't been there battling against the excellent SA opening bowlers , some of those big middle order batting efforts probably wouldn't have happened. Think you are seriously underrating his contribution.

Sure he could have gone on once or twice and I'm not recommending an eight : but rating him lower than Westley and Bavuma , for example , makes no sense...
