Cameron Bancroft

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Cameron Bancroft

Postby meninblue » Sun Nov 26, 2017 6:00 pm

Cameron Bancroft represented Australia in 2011 Under 19 world (hosted by India). The Australian Under-19 team was captained by WIlliam Bosisto. Cameron emerged as the second highest run scorer for Australia in that series. From that group Travis Head has made T20 and ODI appearance for the international Australian team, Gurinder Sandhu in ODI , Ashton Turner in T20. Cameron opened for Aussies in the U-19 WC matches. His only ton in that U-19 ODI WC came against Nepal (125 from 139 balls). There were few 50's as well.

Prior to that also played in the Dubai Under-19s One-Day Series versus WI Under 19 in 2011. Scored one hundred in that series as well.

Cameron played his debut T20 versus India in Australia as a wicket-keeper batsman, batting in the lower middle order.

Got selected in squad of Australia A squad for tour of India in two unofficial tests at Chennai. Top scored with a 150 in second test which Australia won.

Cameron was selected for the test series versus Bangladesh, however the series was canceled due to security reasons.

In Sheffield Shield 2017/18 he scored 442 runs in 3 matches. On the back of a good domestic season for Western Australia, he has earned a Ashes test debut. Unbeaten 228 versus South Australia ensured him a place in Ashes 2017 -2018 squad. Also noteworthy contributions for his debut were the 76 and 86 against the bowling attack of Starc, Josh, Cummins and Lyon. Also he carried on the responsibility of keeping the wickets. Like every coach, Justin Langer (WA coach) rates his student highly.

In his debut test at Gabba, be scored 5 in the first innings and remains unbeaten on 51 in the second innings in chase of 170. To me his technique looks pretty compact. Uses the middle stump guard and there is some makeshift movement towards the off-stump. Not as exaggerated movement to the off stump like that of Smith or Amla, but a measured movement of front and back foot. It is never easy to face the likes of Jimmy and Broad (both of whom are world class bowlers) opening the bowling attack. Still he played with considerable ease, not missing many of the deliveries. Also impressive was his knowledge on where his off stump was and the guess of the bounce while leaving deliveries on the off side. Most of his shots were in the V. His defense too looks compact although it is not as stylish as some specialist batsmen. Seems to prefer a square drive as he did not use the square cut on short pitched deliveries outside the off-stump. How he extends the front foot against the spin bowlers and how he plays expansive drives is yet to be seen. Probably those will come out when he plays a big knock in the series - probably at Adeliade where the batsman can trust the wicket more. With this unbeaten partnership of 114/0 in the chase at Gabba , he has put Australia in match winning position. Few more significant opening partnerships with Warner in this series and the Aussie selectors will be keen to continue this new rightie - leftie opening combo for the next test series.

I think Cameron Bancroft has massive potential as on Oz opener. He's been in the wings for a while now, and I think he'll do rather well in this series. It'll be nice to have a lefty/righty opening combination, which we haven't had since Twatto and Katich.

Certainly looked promising in that second innings knock - albeit the pressure wasn't really there once they'd got through the first few overs and it was clear England were more in damage limitation mode than playing as a team that believed it could win. Just getting through those early overs wasn't easy ; and he did it well so should have secured his spot for this series.

Won't rush to canonize him just yet though : the last couple of openers tried also started rather well but fizzled out all too quickly (though Renshaw may well come again ...he is young)

The left/right combination is indeed handy to have.

He is also fearless at short leg !

He played well for someone with a FC average of 39! I presume that will go up now.

He could use a season or two of county cricket to bolster his average.

I think he scored 1000 odd runs in 2013 for Gloucestershire.

Run out for 10 by a direct hit. Reading text commentary, it seems it was Warner's call leading to his dismissal.

Dismissed cheaply in the second innings...I think the jury's still out on Bancroft.

Guess Aussies will give him a game if they win this test. This is a low scorer. Cameron has to bounce back in next test.

Yes, should be given fair enough chance in continuity. Given the likely scoreline in next two days, it allows Aussies to play him throughout the series.

Even if australia lost the first two tests, and Bancroft registered single figure scores, then he should still get the whole series...5 tests isn't a lot..
