GG - Amir Sohail wrote:Probably an unpopular view, but there seems to be talk of more draconian punishments than are really necessary here. Turnbull certainly has no business getting involved. Ban the senior players for a couple of tests, Bancroft for the last test of the series and move forwards.

It is interesting that this sort of incident draws such a furore, but players blatantly edging and not walking, also pure cheating, is considered ok.

What I will say is with the amount of TV cameras etc around, it is plain stupid to try something like this. Though Trescothick seemed to get away with it in '05.

I agree. I thought the punishment would be a fine / ban in line with the rules on ball tampering, a grovelling apology and that would be the end of it.

Australia ball-tampering scandal

Postby yuppie » Sun Mar 25, 2018 1:03 pm

What punishment has been meted out to other ball tamperers?

So far i am happy with how this is being handled by CA. They are taking this matter very seriously and seem to be putting the game ahead of the team. Now the question will be how long will the ban be? The ICC penalty is a maximum of 4 demerit points, but that will not be enough for CA. At a guess Warner, Smith and Bancroft will not be in the final test. But will they be in the next test series?

Wonder what the odds were this time last year on Tim Paine being Australian captain?

SA all out, now expect Australia to crumble.

Smith and Bancroft get three demerit points each plus match fee fines.

I think that means they should play in the final test.

The target is 429.

Thought he admitted to rubbing murray mints on the ball or some thing like that? My memory could be failing me though...

You're right. Smith got four demerit points and a one test ban.

Bancroft run out for 26. It just gets worse doesn't it Cameron?

Rabada! Warner out for 32.

Maharaj removed Khawaja and Shaun Marsh with consecutive balls.

He ate sweets while shining the ball. Which has been done since time began, usually with chewing gum.

It was SRT I think who went one step further and actually took a mint out of the mouth and rubbed it on the ball. Coincidentally in SA. But in that instance, if was the match ref that got suspended.

Another controversy regarding Cameroon. How true is that. Seems he has history.

Here’s Cameron Bancroft appearing to put sugar in his pocket against England in January...

Yes, right on cue.

My justifiable punishments. Smith steps down skipper, Warner as VC. Both they and Bancroft miss two games each.
