Selectors need to review his contribution and spot after giving him chance to play all 5 test against England. If there is no improvement in his test performance, should be dropped and asked to make a comeback by playing whatever Ranji trophy matches he can later this year.

The previous one down's like Rahul and Chet have set a high benchmark for the next ones batting at this position: 1. scoring big double hundreds at home when set and 2. have a prolific test average for most part of their test career. Shubman is very far behind in these two aspects as of now, although, age is very much on his side and he is notionally rated better than when Chet made his test debut. Shubman has scored big hundreds in Ranji Trophy, however this has not been seen from his bat at international level. For now he has solved his immediate concern i.e. need of a significant individual contribution. Like Yashasvi he should have gone on to score a 150+ knock. This wicket is no where near the turners which have been seen in the past. Other batting lineup of past would have scored 500 to 600 atleast once given how the wicket have been and the spin bowling of England that we have seen in this series. So 104 will make him happy given his form, however based on expectations from him, 104 is nowhere near expectations from him when he is set in home test series. He isn't Suryakumar Yadav who will excel only in T20 format, he is expected to have the game of adapting to all formats and most of the conditions. Nobody cares whether SKY is in test side or not, but a lot of Indian expect Shubman to score heavy in test format. Like they say those who live by sword die by it. Only time will tell whether like Sachin, he will be able to handle and perform to massive expectations. So 104 should be the starter dish for him, the main course is due yet

Much needed hundred from Gill, i dont understand how he struggles so much in test cricket, considering he is unbelievably good in white ball, his technique seems good enough for both, so i wonder if its a mindset issue?

Follows with another decent contribution of 92 runs in third test. Looks like he has saved his place and is more certain to score 400 by end of this series.

342 runs. Very close to making 400. Even with 342 runs he is second highest run scorer from both teams, which shows how average the overall batting has been in this series apart from Yashasvi who has scored 655. Yes there was a magnificient 190 odd by Ollie which was a very convincing knock against spin in India. Right up there with some Alaistair Cook and KP innings which they played here earliler. The ton by Rohit, knock by Zak, Ben Duckett and a gutsy 90 odd by Dhruv Jurel. But only one batsman has shown proper batting form and consistency.

Shubman has covered up his first innings failures by scoring in second innings. However, he still needs to improve his game for test format.

Gill played a very mature unbeaten half century in the final innings.

Was out of form in test matches. Used this series well to get back in form. Second highest run scorer from both teams; Yashasvi being the run topper.

Chet had one weakness in test. Shubman has quite a few to sort in test matches. But Shubman is better that Chet in a way that he is a strokeplayer and can pace up scoring if required. But that stroke playing approach has a huge risk and difference can be between scoring 200 runs and scoring 20-40 odd. Chet was terrific and a heavy runs scorer, he gave up throwing the bat at deliveries that needed to be left alone and he averaged 50 at one point of his career. He would also play such a knock that the shine of ball would wear off and tire out the bowlers making them bowl without giving wickets for many many overs. So Chet may have scored less due to his typical old fashioned test match type batting, but because of his approach those batting with him or following him would be protected or found easy to bat. Chet was silent killer for opponent bowlers and fielders, with similar approach and effect like Rahul Dravid on opponents His 50 would mean opponent had enough. A hundred or 200 from Chet would be too much to cope with. Shubman has not played even a single innings which Chet has played many a times. Also there are few technical things he needs to take care of and determination, technique and shot selection isn't as good as Chet showed in tests. There is potential as Shubman has other positive attributes, but it is too early to comment whether he can be as effective as Chet was in test matches. He needs the first 150+ scores and once he gets past it, he needs a 200+ score to raise expectations of being the next Chet. However, he is just 24 and with experience he may soon start to score big tons and doubles. These 50's and 100-120 scores are not taking him anywhere near to Chet level. Lot of improvement and much better performance is awaited to reach there.

Can he be Chet's successor? I would say there is potential and with some changes and experience he will start scoring big. Not at Chet level yet though.
