Particularly with his 91* in a WC final to win the game.

WC batting averages for keepers, minimum 500 runs.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting

Sanga looks rock solid, but it depends on the job you want doing. Leave MSD out and you need a Bevan type. Leave Gilchrist out and you need a Jayasuriya type. Sanga is going to have a harder time getting in as a middle order bat giving the type of player he will be up against.

Runs in WCs, minimum 500 runs.

Gillys 3 WC final innings...

1999: 54 from 36 balls
2003: 57 from 48 balls
2007: 149 from 104 balls

Total world cup final runs? 260 runs. SR 138

Think it will be a very long time till a batsman can match those stats in WC finals.

Stats for spinners based on SRs hich I think stand up better than econ to different eras.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=bowling

Not picking MM. Tahir v Warne? Warne won a WC. I like Vettori as an ODI spinner- he was phenomenal in the last WC bowling early in the innings and he isn't another leggie.

WC SR is about 140 for Brendan! Given the quality of the rest of the batting, might as well have that scoring potential at the top of the order.

Choosing players how they perform in the big games is important in my selections. Gilly's record in 3 world cup finals will probably not be matched for a very long time. 1 hundred and 2 50s in 3 innings in the biggest ODI match. Has to count for something.

Pace bowlers. Minimum 25 wickets.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=bowling

I want one of them to bat. Using the same incomprehensible logic above (mixture of hunch and prejudice), my lower order is:

Imran/Vettori/Warne/Lee/McGrath.

Though I might be tempted to get McGrath's fielding out of the side.

Picking McCullum over Gilchrist is likely to prove a minority view. Outside NZ.

Brad Hogg could make one of those obscure greatest WC 11's. They are some impressive stats, and one more WC winners medal than Warne

Did Brad suggest to Warne in 2003 that he was looking a bit on the large side :rasta

Taking out Gillys WC finals displays, and he has a very ordinary WC record. Indeed in any selection of Australian openers he would come behind Hayden, M Waugh, Boon and Warner. But those displays in the finals gets him the selection.

Would Aussies win an all time ODI XI WC? WI were leaders for a shorter time, but might well have the firepower to win out (plus add Lara and Gayle to the 70s side).
