Gentle Ben at 5
JB2 at 6
YJB at 7
Moeen at 8

I've forgotten which way round JB1 and JB2 are, which is why I prefer YJB

??? Where is this change of wicket keeping coming from ? I've not seen anything suggesting that is proposed ...

I read that not only is JB2 taking the gloves, but he's batting at five and JB1 is batting at seven. But I've not read why Buttler is keeping.

It is odd.

We find out soon enough.

So who carries the can for the Anderson inclusion? He'll have had the coaches and physios crawling all over him assessing his injury, of course, but I watched Langer talking about wee Davey's injury the day before the test and he said wild horses wouldn't stop Warner from playing.... well I reckon that's true of Anderson. I think he'll have made that decision, not the medico's, based only on his desire to play, with all his fingers crossed................ and England were desperate enough to go with it, of course

the scan will (of course) confirm that it isn't a recurrance of the calf injury he suffered against Durham but a different injury entirely to the other tear in the same muscle in the same leg that he had fully recovered from

Maybe if it's not the same injury it could still be a compensatory one?

Probably. Rum sort of injury . He seemed to have recovered well from all accounts - had been bowling in the nets with no ill effects , started the match looking fine ...and then apparently felt something after just four overs ; hardly an overuse issue. Even then he's fielded all right and only pulled out after being checked at lunch.
Then yesterday he's apparently bowled again in the nets , run around freely enough on the field...and then been affected again as soon as he's batted for a few minutes. Frustrating for him and a blow to the team.

At 37 I guess these things don't heal as well. Will obviously need a bit of investigation as well as rest and hopefully won't mean we've seen the end of him. But you'd have to fear he will struggle to get back on the park during this Ashes ..I'm sure the Australians won't mind that...

When I made a post the other day, discussing Broad's and Anderson's longevity, I was thinking that I didn't expect the two of them to see the series out together, but didn't want to say so much. Looks like it only took seven overs into the series.

England now have a slot in which to fit Sam Curran who, unlike Archer, doesn't appear to have an injury cloud hovering over him, and that will also make the decision to switch from Moeen to Leach an easier one. Not that the absence of Moeen's runs from the team would amount to much anyway, but Curran potentially offers more with the bat than this year's edition of the Beard to be Feared.

Although England might feel that one change is as much as they have the bottom for, and fail to grasp the nettle

I see Root has described what happened to Santiago as a freak incident

hmm.... stepping on a ball during warm up and having to miss the Old Trafford test is a freak incident..... picking a bowler who had been recently injured, not asking him to play any cricket to test the recovery out, but instead asking him to run up and down a couple of times is not a freak incident... it's a poor decision, borne out of desperation, which they didn't get away with

be honest, Honest Joe...... we aren't stupid, don't treat us as if we are

England have a history of doing that with Anderson.

Hurts his ankle in SL in 03. No f/c cricket for 3 months. Plays last Test 24-0-85-0
Jan 05 SA 1 Test. No f/c cricket for 4 months while changing his action in Zim ODIs. Didn't know where the ball was going in SA.
Stress fracture of the back March 2007. In September he bowls 10 f/c overs and then in November 24.1 overs against South Australia before the 1st Test - 5 wickets at 85.60
Misses 1st Test in SA with a calf strain. That took about 2 weeks to heal. Bowled 5 overs against SA Invitational XI.
2015 shoulder injury then rushed to India for 2nd Test after no f/c for 3 months. Didn't last to the 5th Test as he wasn't right.

So no cricket for a month is nothing compared to playing no cricket for 3 months. They think because of his experience he will take up where he left off. All cricketers really need 50 overs before a Test.

Look at Ashes in Australia 2010. He bowled 58 overs out there before the Tests. 24 wickets at 26.04. I think that is the only time he has been prepared on tours. These days 2 warm ups and he gets about 15 overs in 1 game.

4 fast bowlers for a Test. Stokes is never dropped and plays though injuries. It will be the same with Archer, even though he hasn't played a Test yet. :laugh So 2 nailed on bowlers, that leaves two places for all the rest of established and up and coming bowlers.

Broad, Anderson, Woakes, Wood, Curran, Stone, Roland-Jones, the Overtons, Porter, Gregory, Brookes, Tongue, Mahmood, Helm

Next Ashes in Australia, Archer, Stone, Wood, Stokes - all the fast men
