What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Coronavirus and Cricket

Postby The Professor » Fri Mar 13, 2020 11:21 pm

Lots going on today

* Sri Lanka and England postpone their two Test series indefinitely.
*Yesterday the BCCI stated that the India v South Africa series would be played behind closed doors....by today they decided to reschedule the tournament.
*Australia's three games ODIs against New Zealand will be behind closed doors - with one already taken place in that condition. Lockie Ferguson is self-isolating due to a sore throat.
* The Australia's women's team have also postponed their tour of South Africa - with both teams already qualified for the World Cup it will probably be binned off completely.
*The IPL is postponed until April 15 with it likely to be held behind closed doors.
The rest of the PSL will be played behind closed doors with depleted numbers as 14 overseas players and two coaches to return home
* One of the 86 thousand people who attended the T20 Women's World Cup final has tested positive for Corona.
* The continuation of the World Cup Qualification event between Scotland, UAE and America has been pushed back.
*Ireland have withheld judgement on their forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe due to the fact there have yet to be any confirmed cases in Zimbabwe.
^ As of yet there has been no news on the ODI between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
* Surrey, Lancashire, Worcestershire, Somerset, Essex, Hampshire, Warwickshire, Glamorgan and Gloucestershire have all cancelled matches overseas in the next month. Middlesex, Derbyshire and Durham are already abroad and have not stated they are to return whilst Sussex and Kent are both returning from South Africa. Nottinghamshire have also canceleld a warm up game with Northamptonshire due to the fact that they are currently in Singapore.
*The ECB has stated that it has contingency plans for the season to start being played behind closed doors (no jokes please)

All this is going to cost cricket a fortune. Thank goodness the ECB didn't do anything daft like blow all their £70million reserves on an untried and untested new vanity format

And is there any risk of the IPL being pushed further and further back into the year leaving the Hundredth shorn of global superstars because of IPL encroachment?

Ali, Bopara, Patel, Salt and Jordan still with the PSL. If the other nine England players had not gone home couldn't see Salt and Bopara playing.

Bopara has been playing on and off....Salt not at all....which is odd - he was flavour of the month 12 months ago.

Australia's domestic first-class competition, the Sheffield Shield, is set to be cancelled before its conclusion due to coronavirus, the first such event since the Second World War.

Wasn't the writing on the wall for that league as of the last round of fixtures - Barbados had the winning of it.

And that.....ladies and gentlemen.....is that.

CSA, the last domestic league standing, have cancelled all of their games for the foreseeable.

So.

We.

Are.

Done.
