Cricinfo didn't attribute wides to a bowler until about April 1994. Akram played 356 ODIs and must have over 600.

I've heard Michael Holding say more than once that he never bowled a wide or a no-ball in a one-day international.
Is that true, and does he hold the record if it is? asked Liam Clayton from Australia

Michael Holding sent down 5473 deliveries in one-day internationals, and he's right that none of them was a wide or a no-ball. His long-time team-mate Joel Garner bowled 5330 deliveries without a wide (or a no-ball), and Lance Cairns 4021. Without wishing to play down Holding's feat, we should probably recognise that the calling of wides has become much more rigorous over the years since his heyday. Mohammad Hafeez has so far sent down 7076 deliveries in ODIs without a no-ball (but 85 wides), while Ravi Shastri bowled 6613 without a no-ball (but one wide). In Tests, the West Indian offspinner Lance Gibbs bowled 27,115 balls in 79 matches, without a single wide or no-ball. Richard Hadlee sent down 21,918 deliveries without conceding a wide, but did have 22 no-balls, while Derek Underwood (21,862 balls in 86 Tests) and Garry Sobers (21,599 in 93) never bowled a wide or a no-ball. (It's just possible that some of these players delivered no-balls which were scored from, which would not have counted against them at the time so might have escaped notice; the practice of debiting no-balls and wides against the bowlers' analyses started in the early 1980s.)

I have started playing cricket in sweden. Sadly i gave away all my equipment many years ago. Traveling back to the UK i was wondering if there were any suggestions on where i can get kitted out again cheaply. Online is my best bet as ill be not moving when back in the UK. Cheers

I have never played cricket but have a question. Why doesn't Anderson DUCK the short balls to his body? He has had load of short balls, bouncers in his career and tries to defend them with his bat handle. Surely someone in the team/coaches should have taught him. Broad also had trouble but he seems to step away and try to hit 6s.

I used to sway and not duck. Others might disagree, but I found most people that get wrapped on the head usually do so because they have left it too late to get under the ball and end up taking a whack on the way down, or they have stopped looking at the ball and misjudged the bounce. The second point is equally true on uneven surfaces, if you read the ball early and duck, and the ball bounces lower than anticipated, you literally move your head into the ball.

Swaying requires a quicker and easier movement, which allows you to watch the ball that split second more. Its much safer. And in that position, if the ball isnt head height, you can get a solid defence to it.

Its no surprise that Steve Smith nearly got decapitated by Archer... he often completely turns his head and is willing to take impacts on the body, which is great for not getting your bat anywhere near them, but now and then you will misjudge one and be wearing leather.

He's not the only one to misjudge a duck... Tendulkar once got out lbw ducking a bouncer from McGrath that died as it hit the pitch.

I think in general though it depends on the stance and height. Smaller players tend to have lower stances, so its easier to duck. Taller players tend to stand up more, so its far harder to duck. Anderson must be comfortably over 6 foot

I remember Chris Read misreading a delivery once and ended up ducking a yorker. Might have been an ashes series down under

Thanks for the explanation. I just yell at the tv, duck you fool. :) I noticed that Bumrah upped his speed to 92mp. He had been bowling at 88. Fidel Edwards was bowling 95mph and both bowled lots of no balls. Both times I think on purpose to get more chances at him.

I noticed that Dhoni used to let balls hit his body more than any other batsmen and they weren't bouncers as such.

When Anderson was playing against Sri Lanka to save a match he was bowled a bouncer with the penultimate ball that's when he should have just let it hit him, instead of fending it to gully.

Wasn't that against NZ in 1999 ? Was quite comical as it was a slower ball which clean bowled him if I'm remembering it right.

When it comes to short bowling I am one of those silly fellows who has nearly always hooked them ... mind you I wasn't facing Michael Holding :)

Think Anderson is conscious of the fact that they will always be mixing up short stuff with the full ball to him and reckons his best chance of survival is to stand up and try to fend off or evade. I suspect as he has aged he is finding this more difficult but perhaps hard to change old habits.

ah yes... Cairns delivery, it would appear. On viewing the dismissal again I wonder if he thought it was going to be a beamer? Only he will know

Something like that happened with Courtney Walsh too.

I expect they lost sight of the ball.

Cairns got a few with that slower ball in that 99 series, as did Dion Nash. I think both said they had worked on it. Cairns especially got the ball just to hold up in the air slightly, so I guess Read thought it was coming at his body and evaded, and the ball just dived in after. Incredible bit of bowling really.

One shot that I struggle to see how a top player get out to is one that slides down the leg side and 'strangles' you with a nip behind to the keeper. I guess the weight of the player is generally going towards the off-side, which results in a balance issue?
