Spot Fixing?

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Re: Pakistan Spot Fixing?

The match is going ahead it seems.

I agree with all the comments above.... its a terrible thing and I hate it.

Worse than the grubby nature of making some cash is the sudden questioning of the achievements by other teams. A new world record 8th wicket stand suddenly seems worth less than it did yesterday. There will now be honours boards where players records will be disregarded, because 'they were against Pakistan'. If true, and matches have been thrown, world rankings are being affected. It always struck me as harsh that senior Pakistan players received life bans by the PCB in the wake of the thrashing received at the hands of Australia. Did the administrators know what was going on?

I note the calls above for bans for the players involved, but tbh....... Herschal Gibbs! He managed to find a defence that allowed him to resume his career again. Amir might yet find a way to resume his career later. Am I right in thinking that Asif has also had drug related charges previously levelled against him?

Sad, sad day!

It is really disgusting if the reports that this series is being fixed is true. However, betting/match fixing/spot fixing has been happening and accepted by some players many years back. Ponting mentioned that two Aussie players were approached by bookies last year in Ashes, and now this series is also being dragged into controversy. I had stopped following ODI cricket and IPL like a die hard cricket fan since the betting was exposed in ODI's and now i think i shouldn't follow test cricket as passionately no matter whichever team plays. Cricket is becoming a business in every part of the world. Everything except the FTP is well planned. :no

Many people believe that footballers are paid far too much money...... obscene amounts really.... but perhaps this needs to happen in cricket. If players are paid ridiculous sums of money to play for their country, then maybe there won't be the temptation to 'supplement' their income.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the two pacers implicated are Asif and Amir. I'm not surprised at Asif, because he's a jackass, but young Amir....
:no
And clearly the captain, Salman Butt, must be involved, because he knew which bowler to put on when, in order for the no-balls to take place.

Wow, to suggest that today is a big day for the game is a understatment, what happens over the next day of so could spell the end of pakistan cricket..

Amir has wrecked his career in just two balls, asifs shady career has another blight on the notebook....i dont know what to make of it all but the man that fixed it all up is adamant that there have been many more incidents in the last year alone, the ridiculous collapse in australia, the juggling keeper, the dropped catches....

Of course then you start looking at every detail and analaysing every moment thinking why did that happen? why did this happen? every run out, every ridiculous shot that has cost them a wicket, every dropped catch.

His haunting description of that test in aus will leave a question mark over every moment of cricket they have played for who knows how long

"The odds for Pakistan to lose that match, for Australia to win that match, were I think 40-1. We let them get up to 150 then everyone lost their wickets. That one we made 1.3. But that's what I mean, you can get up to a million. Tests is where the biggest money is because those situations arise."

Could Asif be banned for both drug abuse and a betting scam? If so, is this a world first?

I have no doubt at all that this kind of thing has been happening, in any sport, as long as sports have existed; the more money that's involved in the sport, the more extreme it becomes. I just don't know what motive the NOTW had in exposing this particular instance at this particular time - to sell newspapers, perhaps?

I'm not condoning what's supposedly happened in any way; just saying that I feel no sense of shock or even mild surprise - the idea that cricket is immune from such things is rather naive in my opinion. There are, and always have been, people for whom making easy money over-rides everything else.

If this is true ( which it must be ) Pakistan could/should be given a ban from playing cricket.

Why just them? At the moment thers an English county cricketer under investigation for the same. If you read this:

http://www.cricinfo.com/match-fixing-an ... 64111.html

thres hardly a country that hasnt had players involved at some stage.

Ive no idea what the answer is but it isnt just a problem to do with Pakistan.

I did say in a later post that I would be asking the same thing regardless of who did it, because I don't see a way that 4 players can fix a game without the others knowing. Asif and Amir are definatly in trouble, Butt must of known so he could bowl them at the right times, does that mean that Afridi knew and thats why he resigned as test captain ?? Did Afridi return to try and make some dodgy money ( hes the biggest cheat around ) , can Akmal seriously drop that many chances ??

I dont have any sympathy with Amir, naivity isn't an excuse, the players I feel sorry for are the likes of Azhar Ali who might not have any thing to do with it and will always be 'a part of that team' so soon after making his debut
