He's done a pretty decent job from the couple of run outs he's had with good knocks against Pakistan and the West Indies and in many ways a fairly decent innings against the Australians at Lords'.

It's early days however so who really knows, but if the top 5 are going to put the runs up or the bowlers give us small targets to chase then ideally we won't see him too often.

His improvement with the gloves has been fairly remarkable, he'll be sson pushing Davies for ther reserve test slot.

Humble Pies supplied by Swann this time. To those who said spinners cannot take wickets against India in India. He's taken a five fer in one innings. Please collect one by one.

Proved that he can take Pakistani specialist batters wickets in Pakistan, SriLankan specialist wickets in SriLanka and Indian specialist wickets in India.

Good spinners will take wickets against any team anywhere. Mediocre ones, and England have several of those in India, will always struggle.

Everyone must have guessed before this page opened that this time Humble Pies have been served by Monty. Congratulations to the dude, Monty . :salute There are many who need to have these humble pies. How easily he was written off by many that Indian's play spin well and specialist spinners cannot take Indian specialist wickets. A brilliant 5 fer from Monty, taking specialist batters wickets of Sehwag,Sachin, Virat, Dhoni and a wicket of Ashwin. With the success in UAE and in this match , he has proved that he is England's second best international level spinner.

Keep moving in the long queue this time and have your share of humble pies. ;)

OK, Panesar bowled well enough to take advantage of the conditions but never can the conditions have been so favourable.

No pie for me, other than the pork pie in the fridge, on this occasion.

Panesar's performances in both innings in the second test are absolutely awesome. I admit this without any conditions.

If you see the results of any test match played on any wicket to date ,the conditions has always favoured a specific bowler.

Very often the subcontinent spin bowlers dominate over the others. Yet, Panesar single handedly changed it. This is something even the great Shane Warne couldn't do in his palying days in India. That's why Panesar's performance is so cool to me.

The test was played on a wicket that was expected to favour indian spinners. It workded very well for them in the first test. Panesar wasn't even considered for the first test, I think his coming into the second test without much pratice and outperform even the best bowler(Swann) in the English attack to these conditions. That's why Panesar's performance is so cool to me.

As a SL cricket fan I salute Mr. Monty without undermining his brilliance in the second test. Any good/ sensible bowler always tries to make use of the conditions to his advantage.

he didn't really "outperform" swann however

swann had a much better economy rate and their strikerates for the wickets they took was around the same

monty just bowled alot more overs, probably because hes preferred with the newer ball and india had so many right handed batsmen

C'mon rich, Monty got the ball rolling and imo out bowled Swann, who got a couple of cheap wickets.

look i'm not saying monty didn't have a good game , he did

but i'm just irritated by people trying to make out he had some sort of superhuman performance and single-handedly won the match for us

swann took 8 wickets at 14 and an economy rate of 2.1

monty took 11 wickets at 19 and an economy rate of 3.3

take account of how many right handed batsmen in the top order for india and the overall success rates of off spinners and left hand spinners against right or left handed batsmen as well

yes panesar did well , yes he deserved to be picked, yes it probably was a mistake not to pick him for the first test but please dont make it out to be more than it was

You won't hear that from me, just that he was our best bowler in Mumbai.

Knowing Monty, he could take 1-150 in Kolkata. Anyway, come next summer, he will no doubt be back up again, with three seamers being used and rightly so.

I only talked about the second test and had never compared Monty with Swann either.

If I were English I would hate to see people undermining our best bowler soon after witnessing one of the best spin bowling brilliance ever happened in India where even the great Shane Warne had become just an ordinary bowler according to statistics...
