Is West Indies cricket dead ?

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Is West Indies cricket dead ?

Postby sehwagfan » Fri Jun 10, 2011 11:44 am

I was thinking about Chris Gayle issue.

How can a team that is lying so low in the rankings table continue to ignore its best player ? Is ego more imortant than pride for WI players and selectors ?

I feel that WI cricket is going nowhere . And ICC should take over WICB.

West Indies cricket has been in decline for years. Gayle is a good player but his head hasn't always been in the right place when it comes to playing for them.

Why do you feel that the ICC should take over the WICB?

Because WICB is the root cause for all the problems in WI. How can they treat their best player like this ?

He isn't the first player to be snubbed by his country. There are many examples, not just WIs but every international nation. It's none of the ICC's business who a patricular board chooses to drop.

But WI condition is different than others. They don't have a large pool of good players. I mean cricket has just 8 good teams. And it can't afford to lose more.

Ok then let's turn this around.

Supposing the ICC do take control. What can they do to make WI's cricket great again?

Make sure:

1. Their best players are available for selection.
2. Their best players are paid properly.
3. Timely inspection of their domestic cricket and infrastructure.

I'm not sure this is valid as there are only 6 Sheffield Shield teams in Australia, England has 18 counties which team has been the better one over the course of the last 20 years?

But CA is not as inefficient as WICB. And moreover Australian players are paid properly unlike their windies counterparts.

The WICB has never been a rich board, and never will be, even at the height of thier domination in the 80's they were still relatively under paid. Holding used to earn more from a county crontract than he did Playing for the Windies.

On point 2 where do they get the money from? This is linked to point 1, WI cricket cannot afford to pay wages that compete with the IPL, so players want to go IPL, add in then things like Gayles attitude problem (which he has) and you are saying there should be no team discipline.

Furthermore it sets a precedent, how would you feel if ICC said BCCI wasn't fit to run India's cricket because they were not acting in the best inerest of Indian players by refusing URDS and decided to run it themselves?

IMO WI cricket is not dead, nor dying, they competed well against Pakistan with some of their big names missing, they played well in patches like all the lower teams do. They can improve, but an ICC take over would IMO fix nothing.

It is the Indian players that are forcing this, no? Sachin and Dhoni hate it supposedly.

Given the ICC's inability to make proper decisions, I think they are ideally suited to run West Indies cricket....
:lmao
Seriously though, disputes like this have been the norm in WIndies cricket, ever since Viv Richards retired. Gayle is not the first, and he won't be the last.

No, WI cricket is not dead. Believe it or not, in the Test arena, they've improved, when you compare this team to the team led by Lara. Under Lara, the West Indies remained rooted in eighth place in the rankings. Now, they're seventh, ahead of NZ and only just below Pakistan.

Personally, I think Gayle should be in the team. Other WI fans, like ChrisQ and silvamaine, think he shouldn't be in the team. But I don't think Gayle's presence would suddenly convert the Windies into a winning outfit. He's on the wrong side of 30, and it's time for youngsters to come to the fore.

At present, I don't see the WI reaching the pinnacle of Test cricket with this current batch, but they will win the occasional match now and then. Yes, Test crowds have declined, but the 20/20 was practically sold out, and the ODI crowds have varied between poor and reasonable. You could say that the crowds are comparable to the ones you see in South Africa and NZ for similar versions of the game, so not much difference there, IMHO....

The West Indies will continue to stumble along, in spite of infighting and poor leadership, much like Pakistan.
