'The salaries paid by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) are driving senior players away from Test cricket says Marlon Samuels. According to Samuels, the situation is forcing him to retire from Test cricket. “The way how things are right now, it is forcing me to give it (Test cricket) up,” stated Samuels, who was Player of the Final in the just-concluded ICC WorldTwenty20 in India. “I would like to continue and play as long as possible, however, until things improve, I doubt it. If you look at the system now, we have more young players playing when we should have more senior players and a couple of young players”, Samuels said. “It means, therefore, that it could be said that we are not going in the right direction when it comes to the longer version. For example, a lot of players are playing only Twenty20 cricket, who I know have a lot of ability and could do well in the Test side. However, at the end of the day, they are not being encouraged, including financially, and as such, do what they have to do”, he added.'

The Windies cricket board has been told by the BCCI that they will not be charged the 42million dollars for ending their tour in 2014.

Could be seeing the end of WI cricket in the next five years if plans go ahead to make two divisions.

If WI are in a second division of five teams (with seven in the top tier, as per the article on cricinfo) then it's hard to see there being a will for them to continue. Yet if the WI split up, potentially four new sides would contest a place in division two, blocking off a lot of counties that might be encouraged by such an overhaul.

Here is a question for Mike do you think more people would watch WI vs Sri lanka with no meaning and then a test series where WI lose against sri lanka and their get relegated.
Can imagine any series WI got a chance of relegated will be massive new in the carribean with paper, people/ tv etc all talking about it.

Can imagine the series where relegation was decided would bring more money to the board and get people watching the game and I suspect even the players would be into it more.

Simmons has been been sacked as Coach, doesn't seem to have done much wrong in the brief time he's been in charge.

'Simmons' sacking comes at a time when the senior team is preparing for its upcoming assignments against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. “The team will be headed by Manager Joel Garner (and) coaches Henderson Springer and Roddy Estwick,” WICB said.'

To answer bhavesh, I don't think many Caribbean people would care if the WI Test team got relegated, not that it matters now, with the latest ICC developments. Most young people are more interested in the CPL and supporting their national side, i.e. Jamaica, Trinidad, etc. Following on from that, these young fans are more interested in the performance of the West Indies T20 side in the World T20 champs, in much the same way British fans show an interest in a Lions rugby tour, which is a composite of England, Scotland, Ireland, etc.

"Samuels, Darren Bravo and Carlos Brathwaite have declined central contracts offered by the WICB for the period 2016-17. The list of centrally-contracted players depleted to 12 after the WICB had increased it from 12 to 15 earlier this January, for the period 2015-16. Some of the other big names not retained from the previous batch of contracted players were Denesh Ramdin and Kemar Roach; Jerome Taylor was left out as he retired from Tests in July. Also left out were fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell and opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika. Roston Chase, Alzarri Joesph, Miguel Cummins and Jomel Warrican were the new faces in the list of contracted players, which was shortlisted based on performances between October 2015 and September this year. Central contracts are given by the WICB for only Test players."

WICB's contracted players for 2016-17
Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Leon Johnson, Alzarri Joseph, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Jomel Warrican

IN: Alzarri Joseph, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Jomel Warrican

OUT: Marlon Samuels, Darren Bravo, Rajendra Chandrika, Denesh Ramdin, Sheldon Cottrell, Kemar Roach

This might explain the lackadaisical attitude of Samuels in this Test series...he gave the impression that he didn't seem to care. He's 35 now, and clearly looking towards playing the T20 leagues in the twilight of his career. Lil Bravo has clearly noticed that his older brother is wealthier than him, and wants a piece of the action. Carlos is tired of carrying drinks, and wants to capitalise on his World T20 success, uninhibited by WICB central contracts.
