T20 matches I assume, as they are played on successive days.

What tournament is this?

Just out of interest, do many people follow cricket in Canada? What is the expected turnout for these matches?

I think this is a 20/20 tournament....

Shoaib Akhtar has been recalled to the 15-squad for Paksitan.

http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ci/conte ... 72804.html

But MoYo misses out, due to visa problems....

isn't this the same venue where the WI played Bermuda and Canada a month ago?

Yeah it is a T20 tourney.....the same one that was supposed to take place in August between Canada, WI and Pakistan but then it had to be delayed. Afterwards it was expanded to a T20 Quadrangular to include Canada, WI, Pakistan and Bangladesh for August but after the delay Bangladesh couldn't make it and Sri Lanka came on board instead, but afterwards the new date was for October but the WICB hadn't signed the MoU in time possibly because the WI wanted a delay (perhaps something to do with the fact that most of the players who would have been on the WI team also had a six-week Stanford training camp in preparation for the Stanford SuperSeries) so Zimbabwe was invited instead. Zimbabwe herself just made it with visa issues because the Zim board was timely with visa applications and Peter Chingoka isn't going to bother flying with the team and causing some unnecessary political storm when the team has to stop-over in Britain on the way to Canada. Bermuda were speculated by cricinfo to be a possible replacement for Zimbabwe if visas got in the way, but I think it would have been better for them to go back to a triangular format because Bermuda haven't scored more than 99 runs in a twenty20 match (batting first or second) as far as I can tell (and I've checked on Bermuda's scores for the first Stanford 2020, their warm-up tour of Jamaica for the second Stanford 2020, their second Stanford 2020 and that World Twenty20 qualifier in Ireland this year). And since Bermuda were beaten inside of 30 overs the last time they faced Canada in Ireland I couldn't see Bermuda presenting a challenge to Sri Lanka or Pakistan.

This tournament still has potential for more twists and turns though: Zimbabwe are due in Nairobi to play against Kenya and Ireland in a triangular with the first match being Zim-Kenya on the 16th. This tournament finishes on the 13th. And Zim's flight apparently is scheduled only 55 mins after what one would expect would be the end of the final if that match lasted a full 40 overs, so if Zim won the tournament they would be cutting it close between getting the trophy and getting the plane.

I've put a live thread on this here....

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=199

Pakistan's chief selector has resigned.

http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/pakistan ... 73086.html

Apparently, he selected spinner Saeed Ajmal, and he was replaced by opening bat Shoaib Khan. I don't know anything about either of these players!

Ireland for me.

They are now the best associate side around-maybe they should play 4 day games in the County Championship with all their Championship players who play for other counties playing for them, starting from Division Two like Durham.

Oh no... then Northants would only be destroyed by yet another side... and we would lose one of our best players...

But that would actually be a good idea and perhaps would allow for growth in the game in Ireland?

Celtic cricket

Postby mikesiva » Wed Oct 15, 2008 6:08 pm

Pops came up with what I thought was a good idea on another thread, so I thought I'd float it here....

The two Celtic sides in world cricket are doing reasonably well in associate competitions. Both Ireland and Scotland have played well in recent times. But what can be done to consolidate these achievements? It's well known that neither of these countries have the money in cricket to prevent players from migrating to England. Gavin Hamilton left Scotland to pursue a cricket career in county cricket in England. Ed Joyce did the same to Ireland, and now plays for Middlesex. For economic reasons, these players value their county contracts over their national ones....

What can be done to change that? Because if it's not changed, cricket in Ireland and Scotland will be like Kenya - a brief moment in the sun, followed by terminal decline.

Surely, arrangements can be made for Ireland and Scotland to take part in county cricket on a regular basis. These teams should be allowed to participate in the four-day competition in the Second Division....

What do you guys think?

Mike I think the addition of Ireland would possibly work, however, have Scotland got much experience in the longer form of the game? Also, one point that should be raised is the fact that the presence of overseas/kolpakers may ruin the team bond and not allow them to perform so well at intl. level?

The Canadians sent a team to Trinidad to play a 20/20 match against the regional champions, but it was washed out....

Just as well, because the tourists struggled to make runs in their turn at bat.

I wasn't even aware that there was a dispute between the Trinidad palyers, and their board, while this Canada match was going on....

Good to see WIPA resolving this issue.

Resolved? Well, it seems the T&T board selected an entirely new squad, with the 3 trinis in the Superstars squad being available for the the T&T-Middlesex match only.....

Not good. I'm sure there is going to be a mini-crisis yet again, but this time in T&T cricket. :(

I suppose the important factor is that it's a full-strength squad....

"Trinidad and Tobago will field a full-strength squad for the Stanford Super Series starting on Saturday after the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) reached a compromise over the participation fee."

Let's see what the team looks like tonight!

It would be a good idea, but the county championship is round-robin isn't it? If Ireland join then how many more games would be needed and how long would the championship take?

I think before Ireland join the County Championship at Div 2 it might be instructive for the ECB and CricketIreland to have Ireland play in one year in the Second XI Championship with their best players. If they can do really well there then one of three options could then be considered:

1. Keep Ireland in the Second XI Championship

2. Invite Ireland into the County Championship Division 2

3. Have the 4 Irish provinces of Leinster, Ulster, Munster and Connacht send teams into the Second XI Championship and see how they do.

Ireland may do well at the intercontinental cup and benefits from being in the Friends Provident Trophy and having players in the County Championship, but for Ireland to really develop it needs it's own multi-day domestic tournament (whether inter-provincial or inter-county) and having 4 Irish provincial teams playing multi-day cricket in the Second XI Championship might be a good start.
