Can't say I blame him, already 31 (thought he was younger) and needs to get the coin in while he still can.

In that case he will be playing full IPL season for Mumbai. Full availability of foreign player will help plan the squad composition better way.

Only 31 seems early to be giving up on an international career. Unless he's been tipped off he won't be picked. But the problem for T20 specialists is there are so few games for their counties.

To be fair he will never play test cricket, and isn't a regular fixture in NZ's LIMITED overs sides, so probably right move for him

Big day for cricket today.
ipl media rights are for auction.
Should be the biggest tv property in cricket.
the money BCCI should get for it would be crazy.
crazy the difference between what BCCI gets for its media and sponsorship properties and rest of the cricket nation.

Star sports india wins the india rights, digital rights and rest of world rights.
they paid 16347crs which is a lot of money.
which is $2.55 billion or $510 million a year for the rights.
so around 2 Billion pounds for the rights and 394 Million pounds a year.
so ipl is getting double than what the english cricket rights are worth.

Star got total control of cricket in india now.

in cricket yes not in all sports combined though.
ipl is the biggest tv deal in cricket, then England, india and then Australia.
ipl is way bigger than the international rights.
surprised india tv rights are low, although that could be because they are old, if they sold them now they should be higher than england.

Can understand why india tv rights were undervalued in the past india hardly had a fixed home season, or hardly played games at home in a consistent basis, but at the moment it should be worth way more than what it is now.
ah ok the india tv rights expire next year anyway so expect those rights to double as well, maybe treble since Sony would be desperate for cricket in india.

Not even close, the NFL deal in America makes it look like chump change, and that's before you add overseas rights.

Relative to average earnings in the country, its probably very high in comparison to others, but in terms of overall value Indian people simply cant afford £100 for a sky package a month, so the values will always be pipped by European or North American deals based on the income they receive for the packages.

interesting part of it is that Sky or bt didn't bid for the uk rights, unless they knew Star was likely to get the global rights.
Sony would have actually won the india rights.
Facebook for the digital rights.
Followon for ROW A
Bein for ROW B
Supersport ROW C
Star ROW D
Perform ROW E

But Star India global bid was higher than all of those combined so they won.
very surprised BT or Sky didn't place a bid for the uk rights.

I think that boils down to two things....

1. England is the last bastion of 5 day tests being the most popular form of the game, so its arguable Sky would see much of a return on the investment.
2. The domestic T20 game's coming transformation would end up being the more popular format if it gets going, meaning IPL wouldnt be a primary competition to buy in.

Maybe even 3. Sky can subcontract the coverage cheaper from Star than buying the content outright. If ITV managed to get it in the past, the rights cant cost much to show in the UK.

also kills the argument that some clueless people had about the ipl that BCCI or cricket in india doesn't make money but only the franchises.
where do you think the money for the tv rights, franchise fees etc goes to.
the money the franchises make is probably peanuts and probably used to cover running cost etc.
