He won three out of four World Allrounder competitions, only losing against Imran Khan in Kowloon, while winning in Arundel, Taunton and Hong Kong. His old mate Hadlee could never beat him, despite giving it a good bash. "I know it bugs him," says Rice with a smile.

I just read that Sir Viv was in one as well. I vaguely remember M Crowe competing as well.

They should probably start the competition again.
Got ali, stokes, Ashwin, jadeja, pandya, M Marsh, shakib, woakes.
Probably going to have another all rounder period anyway with batting being seen important for bowlers to master.hardly ever see a mug bowler that can’t bat in India or England.
Because of that teams will most likely always have an all rounder in the team or bat deep.

Probably no time to shoehorn that into the calendar. Maybe cut out a couple of county championship matches.

Fairly gloomy picture about the state of cricket around the country and the world, which I expect a lot of people who grew up watching Test matches, and following first class cricket can identify with. Certainly I can. The unknown factor is whether a sustainable future is out there for the game based on a T20 format. That may be the case locally, but it has to be unlikely internationally.

The future of international cricket feels less certain than at any time in my life, and the risk for me is that by diminishing Test matches (which is well underway in a variety of ways) the administrators and players are removing the form of the game that gives it its stature and credibility, and T20 won't be able to replicate that. Could easily be my age talking, I know. Same with the article. There's a tendency to presume that the way you feel is the way most people do.

For me Engel is spot on. Yes I grew up in an era when test cricket was king and was shown on BBC. I am a purist of the first class game.

The suits have got their hands on the sport and only seem interested in the money. In England the County Championship is suffering death by a 1000 cuts and test cricket is going the same way with its day/night novelty and potential reduction to 4 days.

I'm falling out of love with the game. I went to two days cricket last season and watch it less on the box. Even as I type India v NZ are live on Sky but I'm not watching it.

At some point I might start playing my DVDs of old matches again so that I can remember when cricket was much more simpler and enjoyable.

Once the game is sold to broadcasters, they will make every attempt to make profit to recover their huge investments. The TRP data and analysis then flows and becomes a important point to decide what viewers are loving to watch and matches of which format will help them break-even and subsequently get huge profits as well. Broadcasters and ICC are probably developing products which is in demand in the market. After making so much investments i don't think they will waste any opportunity to make more money out of their investments.

Arguments about TV coverage and administration seem like red herrings, especially when compared to the rest of sport around the world where there is both (a) blanket pay to view coverage on most sports (b) there isnt a lot of sport out there that hasnt had corruption, greed, drug problems and straight forward bad administration. If all of these things really mattered, then why are people still paying lots of money to watch other sports? Why has football continued to rise and rise when its business model more and more isolates itself from the fans?

It would seem that T20 has captured the interest of fans, I would find anyone arguing the counter had some form of suspicion towards it that unbalances their view. The problem with test cricket is almost exclusively the product. That being said, do people have 5 days worth of interest inside them nowadays, to dedicate to a sport that can end in a draw. The magic that we see is not something most people do, its a niche satisfaction thats becoming more unusual in its style as time goes on.

It almost feels like the death of test cricket is natural, that T20 simply appeals more to the appetite of the modern society.
