As a one day player few were better to watch, and he did his scoring in a traditional way, mostly operating with good shot timing and placement then smashing the skin off the ball aimlessly. Tend to find as a test match bat he punished poor attacks or played best in easier situations, but his test match record vs Australia might disprove that (although he was never at his best vs India or England, and his record no doubt benefits from not facing his own attack compared to others).

Could make a case that he was never a great player of spin in the longer format, but against pacers he was very good.

Found De villiers kind of ruined his legacy in test matches, although not by much considering if you look by stats he still averaged 50 plus in it.
but the general feeling is that he wasn't really in to it in the last 4-5 yrs hasn't actually contributed much to the side in the Test format considering he skipped SA last two major away tours IE England and Australia, had a poor 2017 as well.
like Sussex said he failed against india and england.
Average 39 against India and 42 against England, average against NZ as well.
Country wise he is consistent but just always felt he never scored runs when SA needed them in tough situation, scored a lot of easy runs, which is probably why people rank Kallis, Smith and Amla higher in the test area than him.

I think Kallis would naturally be ranked comfortably higher, even if England fans never seen him at his best in English conditions. Kallis had a superb record, superb longevity, and if he hadnt been so disinterested in bowling as the workload became high, he was a magnificent bowler. If he had specialized with the ball, I think he could have been world class. Could swing the ball both ways, hit the seam, had control. Smith, meh.... Id take ABDV any day over a player who only scores when people refuse to catch him out. Or when umpires refuse to give him out. Or when he falls over midwicket and you still dont run him out.

I must only see Amla when he looks good, because everytime I watch a test with him, he looks like a wall

funny world though when Awful technique player in Smith averages 67 in england with 5 hundreds and scoring 1355 runs in total.
In terms of what he gave South african test team, think smith would rank higher than AB

Any actual details been published about this canada t20 league? Seems bit odd to me, and another completely pointless league, must surely be some money involved in it?

Kenya taking apart a pretty decent Zimbabwean XI here:

And they're 5-2 today.

Not going well.

India away is a pretty brutal first game. Get them against Zim in the UAE or something instead.
