Arthur Crabtree wrote:Why should Boycott even think a knighthood is justified in his case? The only English cricketing Sir of my lifetime is Botham and he got his partly (mostly?) for his charity work.

Boycott wasn't a model cricketer off or on the field. He was a fine opening bat, but if we're just considering onfield excellence, then I nominate: Graham Thorpe, Kevin Pietersen, Graham Swann, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Bob Willis, Derek Underwood, Alan Knott and Alastair Cook.

Quite apart from my (possibly prejudiced) gut reaction that anyone who thinks he merits being called Sir Whatever is probably a bit of an arse.

Jimmy and cook would be very deserving of a knighthood once they retire

Legendary Aussie cricket caller Bill Lawry has retired. He has been going for longer than I have been following the game and was a bit of a voice of cricket in his native country, and particularly of the MCG. He's 81.

It always surprised me such a great commentator for the sport would have stuck around in a box that gradually filled with detritus around him. He will be missed, a personal favourite of mine.

As a highlight, hearing Bill having a nervous breakdown in that infamous South Africa v Australia WC semi in 99.....

Have to put this out there...briefly watched channel 5 highlights the other day, and they had Alison Mitchell on there, and she is a an awful commentator! Clueless, and Boycs kept putting her right at every turn...im all for equality, but get someone in there who actually knows what theyre talking about!

Can't say she stands out as bad in the company of Boycott and Nicholas!

A female voice in cricket has become fairly familiar and no longer sounds incongruous to me. I think the BBC made that happen. Perhaps C5 brought in AM in the name of diversity, but I don't mind her. Boycott putting her right maybe isn't definitely an indicator of her fallibility?

She's no Alan McGilvray though, clearly.

Stick to positives....

She will always be more interesting than Graeme Swann, even after she is dead.

stick to even more positives... she'll know more about the game than Nick Knight, even when she's dead

and she'll always be less irritating than Danny 'effervescent' Morrison, and far less obsequious than Ravi *modded* Shastri while she's alive

Poor Nick Knight getting bashed for his commentary ability.

Unlike Alison Mitchell and Isa Guha, at least he can tell a good story about Azeem Rafiq's cricketing career :halo:

Sunil Gavaskar is so bad in T20 as commentator. He wants the batsmen to play T20 like test match approach and style. :facepalm Some people will never accept the style which is different to theirs even if that is what the different formats need.

Manjrekar, Sunny and Siva were below par in IPL. Danny as usual in IPL made lot of people laugh and some good points too when he was not cracking jokes and making faces and dance moves. Doull was impressive in T20 (IPL). Naseer Hussain did okay. Vaughan still finding his way to commentate properly on T20. Has least knowledge about lot of T20 domestic players and IPL team combos and roles of players etc. Might improve though with experience. KP was brilliant probably because his own approach suited this format well and brings lot of quality in T20 commentary. Clarke and Brett Lee were very good in the com box.

Going to commentate on Tests in Australia for Channel Seven.
