A bit of a shocking way to treat a player like Chanders!

I totally agree they should be telling those at the grass root level how to hold their bats instead.

Gibson seems to have a big ego which is not allowing him to operate in the best interests of the team. When you cross him, you're out, so soon we'll have a WI side shorn of its experienced players, and with limited talent available, I don't see the results improving soon. First, Gibson kicked out Benn, and then Gayle. How, he has his knives sharpened for Shiv....

http://www.espncricinfo.com/west-indies ... 19456.html

"Following communications between WICB management and Chanderpaul over the past weeks the WICB management and team management will meet with Shivnarine Chanderpaul prior to the Test," the board said. "The WICB management and team management will outline to Chanderpaul the WICB's expectations of him in his future participation in the West Indies team as a player."

So, who's next? Sarwan?

After all, the senior players are the ones who have to fall on their swords for the Windies quarter-final exit from the World Cup....
:?
And those four players are the ones unable to run 20 laps in the time Sammy can, so Sammy is clearly the better cricketer.

It's a shame Gibson is behaving this way. He became a legend at Durham.

What did Mark Twain say? There are three types of lies - lies, damn lies, and statistics....

Here, this cricinfo statto argues that Chanderpaul's slow batting is hurting the WI team....
:stupid
http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/co ... 22281.html

Yes, there's no doubt that Shiv's batting has fallen off considerably from his halcyon days. In the past, he was making big scores, but now he's making 20s and 30s, which is not good enough by his standards. But how can he be hurting his team when this season he's among the Windies top four batsmen with these paltry scores? What would really hurt his team is if he was dropped, and replaced by someone like Kirk Edwards, who can't even make it to 20s and 30s...

These days, too much emphasis is placed on transferring ODI aggressive and risk-taking batting to Tests, and the art of a good defence is either being lost, or not properly appreciated. When you have a team that's constantly under pressure, like the present-day Windies, just hanging on for a draw against a higher-rated team is an achievement. It's a bit unrealistic to 'expect' the WI to suddenly start thrashing the likes of Pakistan and India at will....

I would not want to think how bad the Windies batting would be if Chanders was taken out of the team. He is still the main wicket to get.

I would think that batting too slow when your team can struggle to bat a day out is not really a issue

Shiv is not moving from number five any time soon....
:)
http://www.espncricinfo.com/england-v-w ... 65734.html

'Again, though, the problem for West Indies, despite all their fight, was a lack of runs especially in the first innings. The West Indies players need to start reading situations well and adapting quickly. A major talking point during this Test was whether Chanderpaul should bat higher to strengthen the fragile and inexperienced top order. At the end of the day's play on Sunday, after he had made 91, Chanderpaul was blunt in his disagreement with such a suggestion. According to him young batsmen do not learn anything batting at No. 5 or 6 and to gain experience they need to play at the top which is something Sammy agreed with. "Shiv is quite an experienced players so if he says something he has a lot of reasoning for saying it," he said. "He has done an excellent job for us at No. 5 and he continues to do that. I more want our batsmen to take a page out of his book instead of saying where should he bat. Right now what needs to happen is our batsmen have to stand up and bat, and set a platform so when he comes in he could play his game and we all can bat around him."'

Reading between the lines, it seems that all is not well in the camp....

'Shivnarine Chanderpaul, one of West Indies' finest batsmen, has retired. Chanderpaul finishes as the second-highest West Indian Test run-maker, 86 runs short of Brian Lara: Lara got 11,953 (11,912 for West Indies and the rest for the ICC World XI), while Chanderpaul scored 11,867 (all for West Indies). Chanderpaul, 41, had not played for West Indies since May 2015; the West Indies selectors dropped him after a weak performance during the three-Test series at home against England. While Chanderpaul entertained hopes of a comeback, the selection panel, headed by former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, had provided enough hints that they had moved past Chanderpaul as they ignored him for the various series in the last eight months. Chanderpaul was also not part of the 15 players handed annual contracts by the WICB in December. Last June Chanderpaul had said he would decide by the end of the year when he would exit the international scene. "Definitely, but I am on the outside, just waiting to see what is happening," Chanderpaul told cricket365.com, when asked if he wanted to play Tests again. "Retirement isn't on the cards at the moment. Not for now, probably the ending of the year maybe then." That his desire to play on continued to be strong was evident from the fact that he remained part of the regional domestic tournaments and, in fact, played his last match just three days ago, in the semi-final of the Nagico Super50 one-day tournament for Guyana.'

Great player. Bowlers had to work hard to get his wicket. Just a shame he wasn't allowed to leave international cricket on his own terms.

Well respected during his time at Durham as well.

His boy must be getting close to being old enough to play cricket..... if he's still interested that is.

I liked Shiv. I thought the thinking behind giving him a contract to play half seasons at Durham, at a time when we were trouncing all and sundry anyway was flawed, but I changed my mind when I saw him play. I'm pleased he has a Durham connection.

His son is playing for Guyana already, been in a couple of Windies age group sides as well.
