Would they have gone with four in one test? Maybe not. Would Pattinson have been picked last? Probably. Would he have played in the series? Almost certainly. Without an allrounder, I'd be astonished if Australia can maintain the same three pace bowlers (Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood) for the entire series without one being injured, or just needing to be rested to prevent injury.

Stranger things have happened, but I am sure Pattinson would have been part of Australia's plans for the series.

Jackson Bird - probably the next cab off the rank - has done his hammy. Should be alright soon, but....

Who's next after Bird? Sayers? What happened to Stanlake?

I'd like to see Sayers in, even if only for the extra d in Chadd. After witnessing Aussies losing letters off the end of their names (Nevill, Handscomb), it evens things up to get an extra (following where Kraigg Brathwaite leads).

Maybe Siddle will return?

what did I read about Siddle the other day? I can't remember, but it wasn't good for him.

Hazlewood's going to miss some of the pre-Ashes prep, but should be fit for the Gabba:

There's going to be a (small) dilemma for how much to bowl him in his Shield games - got to balance getting enough prep to be match fit and not undercooked, with the risk of overbowling him and aggravating the injury.

Still, I expect him to be fully fit and a headache for England come 23rd November.
