CSA Provincal One Day Challenge

Postby The Professor » Sun Feb 10, 2019 10:31 pm

In a system that I have thought the ECB should return to, the One Day games in South Africa take place on the Sunday directly after their corresponding 3-Day fixtures.

Boland reversed the 3-Day result by beating Eastern Province in a rain hit game. Jade De Klerk impressed for EP but the Boland bowlers did enough to limit the Eastern batsmen in the 22 overs they managed of their innings.

Meanwhile, Diego Rosier's century was enough to see Northerns beat Easterns by 19 runs.

An absolute corker of a game this evening saw Cape Cobras beat the Lions despite a century from Dominic Hendricks. Thats back to back centuries now for him.

The two teams were tied in the table at the start of the game but the Cobras have moved into 4th place after 6 games.

Two decent games today.

Ryan Rickleton carried his bat with 77* as Gauteng overpowered a below par Border total.

Meanwhile a stonking 122 ball 155 from Northerns' Leus de Plooy was the difference as they edged Western Province out by ten runs.

Free State edged a thrilling encounter by 1 run against Boland in the highlight of today's games.

Hanco Olivier's 119 spearheaded FS's 281-4 before his bowling colleagues managed to keep Boland one run off the total.

Easterns beat Northerns in the final.

Despite a stand out display from Northens' Leus de Plooy (85*), Easterns overturned their target of 276 with 19 balls remaining.

It is the first time Easterns have won the competition.

Timed to run alongside the 3-Day competition - in a way that I predict we will return to in the County Champ one of these days, the One Day Challenge kicked off today.

Easterns had the upper hand over Eastern Province in Game One with a 6 wicket win. Young Khwezi Gumede failed to get a wicket in the three-day fixture but got figures of 3-32 to riffle out the middle order and help his team to victory. The young man is on a lot of peoples radar and was picked up as Cape Town's wildcard player for the MSL later this year.

Elsewhere in Group A, Gauteng beat KwaZulu-Natal Inland in a high scoring game. Kyle Nipper helped KZNI to a total of 269, contributing 68 runs. He was let down by his team's tail and subsequently Gauteng managed to get to their total in the 47th over.

The next round of matches are next Sunday when Eastern Provinces will face Northern Cape.

Northern Cape registered a big win which runs counter to their longer form game of the last three days where EP were the heavy victors.

Thomas Kaber impressed with a score of 66 for EP however he was rather let down by those around him whereas no NC batsmen put on big score - instead it was more of a team effort as they got to 224 in reply to EP's 221.

Regardless of whether we are talking about one or three day games, it seems that one above average performance in the middle of the order is enough to lift your team to victory in South African Provinval tournaments.

This time out it was 72 from Wesley Coulentianos (who played a bit of second XI Cricket for Derbyshire this year) that saw his Easterns team register a total of 229 - enough to keep Northwesterns at bay as they only registered 196.

Easterns are now second whilst NW are in second bottom place.

Hell of a week for Andrea Agathangelou.

After his score of 313 in the 3-Day game that finished on Saturday, he got another century in the one day game against the same appointments to help Easterns to the win.

Jean Du Plessis' 88* helped South Western Districts reverse their humiliation at the hands of Western Provinces in the four day game and claim a win in the One Day Challenge.

It has been a bowlers pitch in Cape Town and when SWD won the toss and chose to bowl they would have been well placed for the win. WP put on 223-8 and SWD polished that off for the loss of 4 wickets in 41 overs.

The win pushes SWD up to 7 points into 4th with Western Province just ahead of them in 3rd.

Ruan de Swart was instrumental in getting Northerns to the highest total of this years competition - his 112* forming the spine of the total of 349-6.

Easterns got nowhere close and were all out for 273 in 46 overs.

Northerns moved up to second place in the table.

North West ran Gauteng close in the One Day game today but fell short by 8 runs.

Despite a century from Lesego Senokwane, North West could not overturn Gauteng's total of 248.

Gauteng are now second with North West in second bottom.
