Shane Watson seemed to indicate when interviewed yesterday that he'll be returning to us.

Given his age, and the fact that Faulkner is waiting to get back into this team once his Aus suspension is over, I doubt he'll be playing too much cricket (if any at all) for Australia next year. So once the IPL is done, he could have a completely free calendar next year. As someone who can play in all three formats, and contribute with bat and ball, he'd be a brilliant signing. The fact that he already knows the place, and did well for us last time, is an added bonus. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Great win this week, but Fidel limping off with a hamstring injury is a potential concern. We simply cannot afford to lose him. Next week in particular is huge. If we beat Somerset, we'll have one foot in D1 next season. But if we lose to Somerset, we'll have almost our whole body in D2 next season. A draw probably means that things will go to the last game of the season (given that our penultimate game is Yorkshire).

Watto has been my favorate Aussie for ages. But has he still got it? Not sure he would have survived for long up at Durham this week. Really need a run machine IMO.
On another subject - what is going to happen to Jimmey Adams? Surely will be dropped for the Somerset game? Unthinkably, could this be his last season? There have been many examples of a benefit coinciding with a poor season. Let's hope he can bounce back.

Tahir has picked up an injury on international duty, so won't be returning to Notts for the rest of the season. So there's no risk of him bowling us out in the final week of the season, to send us down.

On the flip side, it does mean than Dan Christian will be staying at Notts. I'm not sure if this is just for one-day cricket (tomorrow's SF, and then a possible Lords final) or for four day cricket as well. If it's the latter, then he will instead potentially have the opportunity to send his former county down.

Cricinfo reporting that one possible outcome is that Watson signs as our overseas player for one-day and t20 cricket (so effectively in place of Arafat), Abbott signs as our overseas player for four-day cricket, with scope to be our second overseas player for t20 cricket (so effectively in place of Bird), and McLaren signs as a kolpak player (so an outright additional body to our squad, alongside Topley).

I can't see us signing that many seamers, but I'll be blooming impressed if we do. Throw in the signings of Fidel and Berg this season, and it would be clear that the club see the same weaknesses in our bowling that we have also seen. Yes, only Topley (plus the spinners) will actually be English, and that wouldn't please many people outside of the club, but as a Hants fan and member, I've always been happy for us to put ourselves ahead of England. That said though, it's also for this reason that I can't see us signing all three of Watson, Abbott and McLaren.
