Desperate news about Burnham, don't really want to comment on the right and wrongs of it and drugs in modern day society but reading that article in the Chronicle it sounds that the lad may have more on his plate than just a ban from cricket. It may also give an insight into why his batting has looked so unfocused and lacking discipline this season.
Not sure where he stands for the next year, is he allowed to play any kind of cricket even if it is unpaid and can he still take a full part in training with Durham. Good luck to the lad but a long road back for a 20 year old who is probably on his last chance now.

The article in The Northern Echo ( Press Association piece ) refers to a ban from all cricket so that suggests be can't play at all. However, that would not assist any rehabilitation so could be seen as counterproductive so there might be some flexibility?

Yep. I think he is one of the reasons why support and rehabilitation are being emphasised. My first thought about 3 failed tests was he was very lucky not to get the boot but on reflection that might indicate a more serious problem.

The lad is in a mess, without doubt, and why it's happened we don't know but he certainly needs support and guidance. Since he was 9 years of age cricket has been his whole focus under the guidance of adults whom he's known and trusted. So totally divorcing from that environment is effectively withdrawing that support he so urgently needs. Of course he needs to undergo therapy and his lucrative contract cancelled as a deterrant. Put him back on a development contract and let him train under the supervision of the coaches who know him and allow him to play cricket at the club he grew up in. A total ban from cricket is taking away what has been the props of his life. How will that help his rehabilitation. Yet again FTECB prove they're clueless.

I entirely agree. What you suggest would surely be the correct approach - so no surprise FTECB are not taking it!

A good question! Seems to be one disaster after another where just about anything that could go wrong has gone wrong.

If that has proved to be an effective deterrent then so be it. Banning a youngster completely from the game, if this is so, is hardly going to aid the rehabilitation process which in cases of self-harm is surely the sole purpose of any sanction or deterrent.

Financial impropriety, enforced relegation, additional points deductions, players flooding for the exit, stands collapsing, players involved in punch ups whilst on England duty, players taking drugs... all these things just serve to give the impression that the club is falling apart. Given that we need investors and sponsors more than ever before, It's hard to see why anyone would want to invest in Durham CCC after the way the last 12 months have gone.
